HI, this post is just to introduce myself to the forum, I have lived in Cyprus for a number of years but have never bothered to join Cyprus44, if I can help in anyway I will try to pass on any information I think is of any use to members.

I am not in a situation were I need to renew my residency each year so I will not be able to advise members on this subject. I Look forward to being of some help to Cyprus44 members.

In John's profile, it says he is 65. I hope he (or anyone else for that matter) doesn't classify himself as "ancient"

Welcome.

Jeannie: I suppose it is a bit of an in joke! In the good old days anyone who was retired and has been here for a substantial number of years and was old in experience of the country was known affectionately as a "Ancient Brit" to distinguish them from , let us say ,inexperienced, newcomers. They were proud of the title and respected by the Cypriots. But I suppose that was a long time ago when I was a tenderfoot myself. It would be nice to have more Ancient Brits on Board. By substantial I mean l0,20 even 30 years. I am trying toqualify,

Bizziilizzi.

Thank you for pointing out the difference, I lay between the three, and remember there only being a couple of cars driving around Kyrenia, as Allan would have said you could sit on the wall at the post office at 12.00 on a weekend and only see two cars go past, one was a police car ( renault 12 ) with no passenger door and the other one was the Harbour Masters car, a Morris minor with split front window, But these where the good old days before the big build.

I have only had to use a Notar to buy or transfare a car or a house, I have never used a solicitor for anything in the T.R.N.C.

What did the teacher say ?? Have you done your homework ??

It seems the knives are already out.

I am as one would say a ancient Brit, before I came to the T.R.N.C I lived and worked in the south ( Nicosia ).

I notice you have only 6 posts.

Give one a chance before you make your comments.

Thank you to those who have posted a welcome.

I will still continue to monitor Cyprus44 if I feel I can help I will.

So John you knew "the worst barman on the island". Do you remember the Melting Pot? Ah, those were the days.

Ignore the spite (as teacher would say "do as I say not as I do") . There are some nice people and posts here

Welcome dvdjohn.

For me 'ancient brits' would be those living in Cyprus pre 74, through 74 and after. Then there are BAH Brits (before Annan hype) and PAH Brits (post Annan hype). Just my own personal classification system.

Msg 14,

Erolz, Does it really matter when you fell in love/arrived or decided to live in Northern Cyprus ? Everyone has their reasons and some are more compelling than others but that does not mean that they are any more worthy ! This is a great island, divided for sure but still full of the things that many desire - all are entitled to their hopes and dreams and many have found what they were looking for ! Let's be positive for a change, let's celebrate the good things that we find and not always look for the negative ! Life is too short , so try to enjoy it while you can !!

EamonnMc did I say any of the categories I spoke about were more or less worthy than any other ? I am bemused that you seem to think I have said that or that my comments are negative ? Ancient Brits is not my term, it is a term that has been used here to descibe a section of the expat community for a very long time, its not derogatory nor is is laudatory imo, its just a description of one group of expats based on when they came to cyprus, nothing more. The other two terms are of my creation but I think they reflect two distinct 'waves' of expats comming to live here, again without any bias or prejudice between them.

Bizzilizzi, Yes I new Allan well, and the melting pot with no mobile phones on the pain of death.

and Saturday lunchtime at the Grapevine with all the file a faxes out sorting out who's turn it was for coffee which usually meant gin & tonic or a brandy sour.

Erolz, You are quite right, the ancient brits did arrive before 74, most of them had retired from the colonies. I arrived in the early 80s.

welcome John, just add to what you want, when you want and be happy. At 65 you have some life experience and how can anyone know what they can add to or even advise on until the subject appears, just keep reading and there is bound to be be something that comes up, "I know something about that" you will think and in you come.

Erol: Message 14. Out of friendly interest, how do you categorise yourself? I think you said on an another post that you were born and bred in the UK?

Does being in Cyprus in 63/64 qualify toward Ancient Brit? Even if it took a while to get back.

I think that is is relevant that many pre Annan expats had experienced Cyprus before (Armed Services, Civil Service, Diplomatic , plus families etc.) We had some idea and experience of the political problem and knew literally where the Turkish Cypriots were coming from, and made a consious and informed decision

John: Message 18 Ah yes, I remember it will. I didnt frequent The Grapevine much, but I knew the Melting Pot when it was in old Girne in a Chinese Resteraunt (I think THE only Chinese Resteraunt inthose days) And Alan's letters to CT.

BizziLizzi I do not really classify myself but I guess if i were to placed in the 'normal' classifcations I would fit into the 'London Cyp' category most or 'half London cyp'.

Ancient Brit as I understand the term specificaly refers to residents in Cyprus. My Mother was living and working here in the 50's and still visits. She is arguably 'ancient' and a brit, but she is not an 'Ancient Brit' in the way I understand the term.

Yes I agree residence (as opposed to vistis) is a qualification for Ancient Brit. The query is duration. Maybe previously it was pre or post '74. Now perhaps it is BA or PA (before Annan, or post Annan). The Annan plan seems to have had some strange (possibly unintended and unexpected) reprecussions - certainly they have had a devasting effect on North Cyprus and seriously damaged my quality of life.

Peronally I am not keen on the term "London Cyp" (or London Turk or Londralı). For one thing it is inaccurate :

although many Cypriots (Greek and Turkish) gravitate to London a lot live in other parts of Britain. Maybe "Anglo-Cypriot" for anyone who has lived in both places... ................... oh darn, now I've proably gone and upset the Scots, Welsh and Irish!
