Ken Msg 7 - Is that prejudice I detect, what about Birmingham, Glasgow, Belfast etc.

The trouble is that to make it work the airline has to pre-sell enough seats to tour operators to make the flight viable. So you need to help the tour operator by wanting to buy their package holidays but only from your best airport (Birmingham for me)!

Thomson Airways rescheduled flights yesterday following strikes by Cypriot baggage handlers on Wednesday.

Customers travelling to the UK were expected home yesterday evening.

As a result of the disruption, there was a knock-on effect for a small number of flights departing from the UK.

Travel company Astonbury Ltd, (Skyjet) has stopped trading.

Skyjet sold flights to Amritsar in India from Birmingham on the Austrian airline Comtel.

Comtel is under investigation after being reported in the news of possibly "dumping" passengers.

Skyjet was a licensed ATOL-holder

Travel giants have acknowledged hidden charges - BBC’s Watchdog TV program.

During a BBC program last night, online travel agents and airlines were criticised for slipping things into customers baskets without them noticing.

Lastminute, Expedia and Opodo all came under fire for automatically adding insurance into their packages, Thomson and Flybe were criticised for doing the same with baggage.

You need to ensure you are not optioned in or better still go to a reputable travel agent (like us at IAH?) who will ask you what you want and talk with you in order to help in the booking process.

Lots in the news about Thomas cook having to take on more finance during the current lull in holiday sales.

From travel trade press today:

Agents have pledged their support for Thomas Cook while the company continues to hit the headlines.

Advantage Travel Centres leisure director Julie Lobue-Said accused the media of over playing the situation & remained confident in selling Thomas Cook holidays.

"We have absolutely no concerns as to what we’re selling and are still recommending selling Thomas Cook products,"

UK airports Wednesday 30th November - From Pegasus rep in the UK @ 17.00 29-11-11 NB THIS INFORMATION CAN BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE - WHATEVER MAKE GOOD TIME ALLOWANCES FOR ARRIVAL, CHANGES OF FLIGHTS AND DEPARTURES:

Hi Tom

Best I can currently offer for any info being sent out!

STN expecting delays to be kept to a minimum outside of the first and third wave of inbound aircraft movements.

Pegasus PC501 due arrival STN 12.15 should currently experience minimal delays, potentially around 30 mins to one hour

STN has requested no diversions into the Essex hub, therefore reducing additional passenger loads in the arrival area.

However this is subject to "On the day" operational changes & reasons, with flights being stacked for LHR and LGW with fuel issues.

We would request all passengers booked for the PC501 on the 30th turn up and check-in as usual, STN and Pegasus UK staff will endeavour to make arrivals as smooth as possible.

Hope this helps

P

We have been told that HMG Treasury has confirmed increased rates for Air Passenger Duty (APD) from April 2012, same bands, & also confirmed passengers already booked will have to pay the additional tax - with airlines expected to collect extra money.

This may be of interest:

The European Commission has announced a comprehensive package of measures to help increase the capacity of Europe's airports, reduce delays and improve the quality of services offered to passengers.

The package focuses on ground services provided to passengers and airlines, including baggage handling, check-in, and refuelling. It also addresses issues such as airport noise and the efficiency of the existing network of take-off and landing slots. Launching the proposals, EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas, warned that Europe's airports are facing a capacity crunch.

“If business and the travelling public are to take best advantage of the air network, we have to act now. 70% of all delays to flights are already caused by problems on the ground not in the air.”

On present trends, nineteen key European airports will be full to bursting by 2030. The resulting congestion could mean delays for half of all flights across the network.”

“The status quo is not an option for airports in Europe. Faced with intense global competition, if we do not change the way we do business, we may not be doing business at all.”

The Commission proposals introduce market based mechanisms for the trading of slots between airlines in a transparent way, with measures to ensure that existing capacity is used by airlines. The threshold for the "use it or lose it rule" would go from 80% to 85%.

The Commission measures must be approved by the European Parliament and Member State Governments before being adopted.

DD Will this make any significant changes for air passengers? Let us wait and see.

News from the UK travel press

Ryanair is to increase its checked-in baggage fees by 25% for next summer.

For those of you who use the no-frills giant it is increasing hold luggage fees from £20 to £25 per bag during June, July, August, September 2012 & during the Christmas period in 2012.

The changes apply to online bookings made after December 15.

A little reminder - At this season there will be about 4 million Brits going away from the UK – among other things they will want to take away will be computers be they a tablet, Web-book or Laptop

Most airlines will allow the machine not to be in your Cabin Baggage weight allowance BUT NOT cables, power supplies etc So pack the peripheral bits and pieces in your cabin or hold baggage but expect them to cost part of your weight allowance.

Please remember that your hand-baggage is limited in size and weight with each airline (each airline has it’s own rules so check them on the web sites) and some will allow you some items as "free" on board i.e. they may allow a computer, a mobile, a camera, a coat etc within reason BUT each Airline has their own rules.

To misquote Pegasus - there is a Zero Tolerance rule even the airline owners would have to pay if they take excess weight into cabin or hold.

So don't risk it follow the rules, unhappy is not the best way to travel.
