I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the raffle and auction for the defibrillator appeal (Esentepe/Tatlisu) Special thanks to, Stephen Meacher, China bazaar, Ali Kayim, Cape wines, Jenny's tea garden, A.M. & B Whytock, J & A Kelly, Remzi's restaurant, George Roper, Firdevis bag shop, Sossad Binday, and the many others who donated so generously. The appeal has raised over 14000 tl in 10 short weeks and the organisers are now in a position to purchase 4 defibrillators plus a dummy one for training sessions.

Next time there is a "Health Week" why not ask the medical centre if they would make a contribution for every patient that is booked in through TRNC Health Care. Looking at the numbers who have attended in the past this should raise some funds.

How is this going to work logistically, where will they be sited and how many people will have to be trained on the operating proceedures, should those who are going to be trained have a medical background, i.e. nurses, retired doctors etc. Will there be insurance cover against any claims of mal practice. I know these things would have been researched but surely anyone who is going to be trained should be covered by indemity insurance.

decanddyl. The positions that they are going to be sited is still in the planning but they will be spread between Esentepe and Tatlisu. The official line on the use of these machines is that you don't need to be trained, as the machine talks you through the procedure, although basic First Aid training will of course help. You do not need a medical background to be a first aider (doctors and nurses are in their professions third aiders). Anyone trying to save a life, providing they don't do anything obviously beyond their capabilities, i.e. open heart surgery etc. are covered by the "Good Samariton Rule".

Sorry to be a pain but will there be street maps with every machine or nwill all those trained for certain areas be taken round there designated area of responsibilty and shown where all the dwellings are located. Whoever is looking at this must be scratching their heads as to how directions will be followed.

Lets wait and see, and dont go fretting I am sure the people that are doing this will have dome their homework, and if you are not involved you will be told in time, this board and all the gossip and surmising will not change anything I am sure, if you read message 10 there have been 19 people trained in that particular area and if they are working with the civil emergency people they will know where the defibs are situated and more than likely they will be the first to be called in an emergency, if you want to really help and get to know everything join them and then you will know it all first hand! I think you are trying to make mountains that are not there luv.

Hiya. Just joined and came over this whilst reading through old posts. Such a great idea and worthwhile cause. What a great ammount raised. Have the machines now been bought and in place at Esentepe and Lapta areas? and if so, will their locations be made public.

Without knowing what has been set up re defibs, are those being trained going to be first responders? As any one is aware a first responder should be trained in first aid and not just use of a defib. There should be a roster of first responders in any major village areas that can get to the emergency scene to stabilise the victim/s prior to the ambulance turning up. Although I welcome the defib initiative I think it needs to go a bit further. AJ

Thanks for the update teatime. Are both areas working together on this as I can't see any news from Lapta area apart from post 2 on here? Re post 15 - it says earlier that people have already attended courses as first aiders, although the number seems quite low for areas of Esentepe and Lapta.

Probable placements of the de-fibs will be Tatlisu, Kucuk Erenkoy, Esentepe Village, Karagac, with location of 5th to be decide. these will all be on a main road location except for the Esentepe one which will be in the village. Once we have them "In hand", the next job will be getting boxes made to put them in, which shouldn't take too long.

Thanks teatime - looks like you are covering quite a bit of the east side with these locations. Is the 'in hand' expected soon? Why do you need boxes?

Tania My guess is that the defibs will have to be in accessible places (ie accessible 24 hours a day) so they will need to be protected from the elements and the boxes either padlocked or wire sealed.

Tania, AJ has answered your question for me. In hand, is very soon, as they are classed as medical supplies it is a touch more complicated to import them, but we are on top of this. We are also hoping to get the boxes alarmed to discourage vandalism, but they will be accessible to all if the need arises.

I read also on the glencoe board that everything is in hand training wise and that indeed about 20 people have already been trained as first responders and others including locals are about to be trained with the defibbrilators {spelling ?}, it's so nice to know that they are covering all the bases and that the machines will be placed in prominent positions. Well done Esentepe and Tatlisu

Update: Collected the de-fibs this morning (5 + 1 trainer), so we now have them in our hands. Next step is agreeing with the local Beli's reference siting, getting the boxes made for them to go in, then all systems go. We will be arranging training sessions for anyone who wishes to have a go with one, in the near future, will post when this has been organised.

First of all congratulations to all who contributed and worked towards getting this equipment. Iit is very important that anyone who is likely to use the defibrillators are properly trained on them first - vital minutes can be lost working out how to use it, and could be dangerous to bystanders. Most importantly, if a casualty is not breathing - proper CPR procedures must be done while waiting for the defibrillator to arrive, you have only 4 minutes before it is too late, and the defibrillator will not be able to perform a miracle, the first action you must take is to call the ambulance service. Anyone wishing to do a one day course run by CESV/112 which will cover CPR, use of the defibrillator , choking and other casualty situations can contact me if in the Esentepe/ Tatlisu area Sue 0533 839 8632, once we have around 10 + people interested we can arrange a venue nearby. Its very interesting and may help save a life sometime.

Just come over from the 'mother land'! Great piece of kit - a 10 year old could use one effectively. For any negative dodderers out there - try and think like you did when you were 10, and hope you're close to a de-fib if someone suffers a cardiac arrest. CPR training is beneficial, but not essential. De-fibs can be used without any training. You too can save a life! Try and access the training de-fib purchased by these guys - you will not be dissapointed.

Thank you fallenangel for your support. Below is the latest info from the UK Resuscitation Council advising on the use of AEDs. It points out that as the new Defibrillators are now so 'self explanatory', there really is no longer a necessity for prior training. Although all, or any First Aid Training is obviously preferable, it is no longer imperative to enable use of a Defibrillator. Please do not be afraid to use one........you could save a life!!!!! THESE MACHINES WILL NOT ADMINISTER A SHOCK IF IT DOES NOT ADVISE ONE!!!!..........IT SIMPLY WILL NOT WORK!! http://www.resus.org.uk/pages/aed.pdf

AJ - Check what's happening in the UK - and for that matter the EU, including the 'South'. De-fibs are being distributed in numerous public areas, e.g. shopping centres, train stations, sports stadiums, offices and such like, they are available for, and encouraged to be used by, the general public - hence they are not 'padlocked or wire sealed'. Tip my hat to all those involved in introducing more de-fibs into this beautiful place.
