There is a big difference, the neighbour was able to dial 999 and a rescue team was sent out...and the owner is being prosecuted, personally I would hang the bloody owner, but I am one of those 'overbearing' dog lovers.

Marks. Police and the courts are not that responsive to humans in my experience never mind animals especially in the UK. My point however relates to those who seem to think this is a uniquely Cypriot thing. Animal cruelty holds no ethnic or racial divide. All are guilty.

Visitor, I agree but sadly in Cyprus cruelty to animals, esp dogs is endemic.

I am afraid it is pretty endemic everywhere. Just better hidden in many countries! The number of starving dogs I see in rural France is tragic. The shelters here are unable to cope with the numbers of abandoned pets. Many farmers just kill unproductive dogs. For some unknown reason I think animal cruelty has risen in recent years. look at the UK and the huge rise in dog fighting.

Again I agree in principle but per capita it is still far more endemic in Cyprus and I do mean the whole of Cyprus.

Man's Inhumanity to Man is increasing IMHO, and as animals are considered to be "less" then humans then cruelty to animals will increase in proportion. You don't even want to know about the cruelty to donkeys in the Middle East, it's just horrific in the extreme.

Mess 9 - "You don't even want to know about the cruelty to donkeys in the Middle East, it's just horrific in the extreme" - Tango, it has always been thus. I have always been amazed at the way the arabs are so fiendishly cruel to animals, even those on whom their very lives depend! They enjoy it!

Suggesting one race is worse than another for cruelty to animals is pure prejudice and ignorance. Its the HUMAN race I despair of! I dont think, however, it has got worse - like so many things we hear more about it because of increased communications. Also , particularly in "First World" countries there is a higher proportion of animals kept as pets - and therefore more disposable - as opposed toworking animals. In "My Family and Other Animals" (set on Corfu, l920's or 30's?) Gerald Durrell includes a very distressing episode where a very nice woman , whom he was fond of, buried a litter of puppies live and couldnt't understand why he was upset. Perhaps it is a perception as animals as a lesser form of life without feelings that is the problem, We should also see a difference between deliberate cruelty and cruelty through neglect stemming from ignorance or poverty of the owner.

Puppy farms are wild spread in Italy. Yes i have a personal disgust after finding my dog from Italy had been stiched under his scalp to keep his face up due to bad breeding. From top show winning Italian bloodlines. Sadly he died after a long op to try and help him. We will never forgive or forget!! (We have the proof on film along with a TRNC goverment vet , who took part in the op ,as a witness!) The more i have looked into Italy the less i like their ways. There is lots of stuff online telling us that the goverment even funds puppy farmers there! Italians don't give a damn about animal care its all about money.
