Rem,inds me of life in the south when I took a mattress to be re-stuffed. I was on the back, in front was the driver and the mattress was rolle dup in front of him. Ah, - heady days of no rules and regs, and we are still here to tell the tale - but the mattress is long gone.

Great photo I saw a similar scene in Malaysia. The guy had everything including a washing machine strapped to his back whilst riding his bike. Spider - my only point is that there are other things that are important in keeping children safe. At least in Cyprus you don't have youngsters stabbing each other, no go town centres, huge numbers of unwanted teenage mothers and pregnancies and gang and youth crime. Some starting as young as 8. By all means clung and click.

Yes some things are bad. My point however is that there is more to childcare and safety and Cypriots are from my experience good parents.

My home is Cyprus, and this is a forum about Cyprus. Have you anything to add about about Cyprus? (At least you admitted you were talking about the UK.)

I cannot understand how people who so obviously dote on their children don't see the need to keep them safe. My blood runs cold when I see them standing up in the centre of the car, walking about on the back seat or on the front of an adult on a motor scooter. Do the parents not realise the damage that could be done to their children if they collide with something, surely they must have that much common sense. The Government here doesn't seem to have any problem in introducing new laws as and when they feel like it, admitted enforcing them is another thing, but surely they can see that the carnage on the roads must be dealt with.

Giles I suggest you read the thread. I was commenting on remarks made abt Cypriot/Turkish parenting and safety issues. I tried to make the point that whilst I agree re seatbelts in many areas Cypriots are good parents. They do not have the social problems with young people that many countries like France, UK, US etc have. So my point was abt Cyprus. Obviously you have struggled to follow the thread and instead have chosen to be nasty. You raised the issue of UK and looking at the facts your right. For your info I am Cypriot. I have a home in the TRNC and my family live on the island.

Agree with hattikins, message 20. I am appalled at the lack of safety/awareness each time we visit. Despite (I assume) some efforts on behalf of the government to try to improve road safety and driving in general, it seems to me to get worse, rather than better. I have had a driving licence for well over 40 years in the UK and drive pretty much on a daily basis, but I wouldn't attempt to drive whilst in TRNC. Mys husband is a very good driver but I still feel as though we taking our lives in our hands each time we venture out in a car.

A friend of ours was speaking with the man in charge of Road Safety, when she commented on the lack of Safety laws regarding children in cars his reply was " those parents are Turkish, not Turkish Cypriot ", what hope is there with that sort of attitude.

Great picture - but what does it have to do with children - kids perhaps? But I do wish people would stop trying to impose their idea of lifestyle on this country! If you like nanny (ooops! pun unintentional!) states why did you leave the UK?

hattikins message 24: A friend of mine was speaking to another friend who knew a person who spoke with a Brit who said that it is OK to beat your child with a broomstick.' what hope is there with that sort of attitude. ' Stop stereotyping people. One persons alleged view does not represent a whole community's view or values.

My only defense for these people is probably the fact that they earn very little money. I have met many families who struggle to put food on the table, let alone buy a car that has seatbelts. I wonder how many families have gone without a meal or two so that the father can buy a helmet to ride his bike to work legally. When I was a child, our car didn't have seatbelts. I know the roads are becoming, have become faster and more dangerous lately, but what can they do?

Message 26 Stop stereotyping people. One persons alleged view does not represent a whole community's view or values. Obviously one persons view doesn't represent the whole community but a remark like this is a little worrying. For myself I find it unacceptable and irresponsible for anyone, whatever their nationality,to disregard the safety of their children, it appears that the only way to improve things is to educate people and then to introduce and enforce the laws, if that offends you the so be it.

Message 27 It would have to be a very old car not to have seat belts, the belts are there, people just don't use them, it's as stupid as those who ride their scooters/motor bikes while the crash helmet is left dangling from their wrist, it doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Hattikins, I'm not saying I agree with the no seatbelt/helmet law, but I feel for the poor people on this Island struggling to make a living. I'm aware of many a bar person, builders helper that are living in tin shacks to enable them to send money home for their wives and children.
