This is a very 'pro-Turkish' text, the sentence you quoted must be a mistranslation of some sort. Kemal

@ msg 6, Newlad: (...) First signs of enosis 1833, (...) ▶ Correction, Paul. Cyprus was part of the Byzantine ("Greek") empire until about 1180, when the usurper Isaac Comnenus became the self-styled 'emperor' of Cyprus. From about 1191 (conquest of Cyprus by Richard the Lionheart) the local population in Cyprus has always supported 'enosis', as ordered by and told to them by the Greek Orthodox clergy - the old source of many problems in the island.

Re: Msg 13,"...So how could the Turkish Cypriots have declined to join the E.U.When they voted yes to the Annan plan." Don't worry, newlad, you haven't overdosed on cocoa, it was a joke (well, sort of), or a wishful thought (see Msg 3).

Re: Msg 15, As was said in Msg 3, it is either a very bad translation or a piece of propaganda - in both cases the statement is untrue, so don't loose your sleep over it.

There is a sort of horrible twisted logic to it. The EU considers the whole Island comes under the rule of the autorities of the so called RoC. Therefore they admitted the wole Island on that basis that the North came under the RoC and if part of the population refused to acknowledge rule by the RoC they therefore declined European membership! Only they just conveniently forget that they had promised "Cyprus" EU membership if the population of the whole Island voted for unification - and even more conveniently that it was the Greek Cypriots who voted against. So the EU got it wrong! Now what a surprise. Hardly the only thing the EU got wrong was it!

Re: Msg 20, Absolutely, Miss Prism! A brownie point for you for the vigilance. What have you been doing in a political thread anyway? Were you lost (loosely speaking)?
