The term used is brindle pitbull, not tiger stripe.

Attallah, sorry, but I don't understand why you would want to instigate bringing more puppies into this world when there are already hundreds born every year without good homes to go to?

Please think about this . There are far too many strays here and we dont need Pit Bulls added to them.

Are your sure the puppies will be "safe in the house". Is it your house ?- your say you are a student?

One small terrier puppy did a lot of damage in my house - think what a litter could do.

And what about when you sell them - who is going to buy them and how will they be looked after? And do remember dog fights are illlegal here.

Re: Msg 1,

It is illegal to bring pit bulls to Cyprus, so how legal is it to breed them?

Attallah - are you mad??? Pitbulls are very dangerous dogs! I can't understand why anyone would want to own one, let alone breed them. It is illegal to own them so who is gonna pay money for one and take the risk?

Last year i was at the quarantine department. The guys says to me have a look at that puppy just come in from Turkey, what breed would you say it is? Pitball was my answer. He said someone had imported it saying it was a Shar Pei! Well as a Shar Pei person i know my Pei, no way was it. I then asked him if he thought it was a Shar Pei and he answered no its a Pitbull.

They are listed as not welcome here, but as we all know the rules are there to be broken.

swyflot, do you know the person who is breeding or hoping to breed Pitbulls?

I personally do believe that there are not any bad breeds , only bad owners.

Totally agree Blade, no bad breeds, just bad owners who exploit their 'pets'.

Any dog - even the most disciplined pet - is capable of violence in certain situations - when they are subject to abuse, frightened or protecting what they consider to be their territory or "family"

Certain breeds are more aggressive than others, and when that is combined with weight and strength, need more expert training and handling than the average resposible dog owner ( and I include myself here) is capable of.

Pit bulls are a relatively new "breed" and comprise a cross between a bull dog and various types of terrier. They are deliberately bred for their fighting qualities and - sadly often - for dog fighting.

I have been told, but do not have it officially, that importing and breeding them is illegal here. I have also been told that some people get round it by "reinventing the wheel" and producing a "false" strain by crossing bulldogs with terrier.

Dog fighting is illegal here - but as in the UK I believe it is on the increase.

I too believe in the theory "no such thing as a bad dog, only bad owner"

But,I also believe some breed of dogs require much more maintenance than others in the way of socializing & training in order to be safe & social.

Unfortunately, people in Cyprus (this includes the south) either select a breed without doing any research on it's demands OR even if they do,they ignore the needs of the dog when the novelty wears off!!

They see a good looking, well behaved, trained dog and they think if they buy a puppy of the same breed, it will automatically grow into the same as the dog they liked.(locked up in the back yard or tied to a tree)

No one realizes the time, commitment and the cost put into having such a dog!!

Bull terrier have been used as police and guards dogs in America but by specially trained handlers. I dont think there is any call for this type of use in the TRNC and, given that there are far more suitable breeds for pets and companions and even house guard dogs (even if you want a "macho" breed for status) one has to query the motives of someone breeding them.

The other matter for serious concern is that one or two dogs may be domestic pets. Three or more becomes a pack. Dogs (like people) are more dangerous in packs . If any of these pit bulls are abandoned and allowed the breed with the existing stray population the latter (which currently is not really aggressive to human unless provoked) will become much more dangerous.

Davpat - think you actually agree so why state 'rubbish'? What we have said is that it's the owners that are bad as they encourage the bad behaviour or don't train their dogs to behave. As you say, dogs are a bit like children, in the right hands they blossom, but in the wrong hands they can become disfunctional - just like dogs in the wrong hands.
