Didn't the Catholic church 'turn a blind eye' to this sort of thing for years?

Visited the Vatican when in Rome one time.

We were in the cafeteria area, and the lady asked me “Cosa vuole da bere?” (what would you like to drink?)

I replied “have you got any Coke?” ………….. you could have heard a pin drop!

Sadly, my first thought is "what type of persons is he trying to recruit to his church to replace dwindling numbers" ? If I believed in capital punishment I would want him crucified for encouraging pedophiles.

The Catholic Church/Faith is slowly but very surely digging a very large hole in which to bury itself. Before long the only parisioners will be those who were brought up never to question the local priest as what he said or did was sacrosanct AND/OR the poorly educated around the world, who once again would never think to question.

In 2009 I was in the Philipines, a hugely devout Catholic country, when a scandal broke out. It appeared that at least half (20 or so) of the priests sent out from the US had been accused there of paedophilia and they were being dumped to save face for the US churches. The Filipinas were furious and it was doing a lot of damage to the Catholic church - I wasn't there long enough to hear the outcome.

One of many reasons I loathe Faith in any way shape or form, not least, the oxygen of the media promoting these disingenuous people.

I realise Faith is a place to turn to when one can't find an answer to a distressing or otherwise problem (ie: one talks to oneself in effect) and one can't count the millions of people who come off drugs, alcohol; come out of some deeply distressing or confusing situation, or from birth, have been either threatened, or brain washed, to uphold a Faith - but as more people have been maimed (and continue to be) murdered or damaged in the name of Faith than all the wars since the world began - I sincerely wish Faith was removed from this planet. Regarding Catholocism - to have a male (the Pope) who will never be married, have children, pay a mortgage, fend for himself, have a 'normal' sex life, and so on and so forth - dictating to billions around the world how to run THEIR lives (and billions actually listen to him) well - you couldn't make it up..

Yet another headline tag that simply is not true.

If you read all of Benedict's speech he condemns paediphilia outright, in all walks of life.

What he does say is that in a number of Asian countries esp from the seventies this kind of child abuse was becoming an industry almost normal and seemingly accepted... especially by paediphiles who would travel from the West to indulge their criminal activities.

He is correct. We have seen many investigative programmes on the BBC showing this kind of travel in order for these people to indulge their sickness. The BBC and many journalists give creedence to his words.

If would be helpful if forum users would at least give an honest tag and the whole of the report.

It is all too easy to pick out quotes for a cheap headline.

My own thoughts on this are very simple. Anyone.... teacher, vicar, priest, policeman, nurse, doctor whatever... should be prosecuted and put away for a long time.

yrret msg 4...i am assuming you mean Pollsmoor in Cape Town....and i'd have to disagree...child rapists are most welcome in that prison, more so than a lot of other prisons...however, i understand the statement!

Joseph is right and put into words exactly what I was thinking. The headline was seriously misleading The speech did condemn paedophilia, it stressed the need for the Catholic church to tackle the problem , but put it in historical context.

I am not a Catholic and I have a lot of problems with the Catholic faith - indeed any organised religion.

However it damages rather than supports a case if people start ranting about their preconceived views about a speech they havent even bothered to read properly.

The prevelance of paedophilia is not basically due to any of the main recognised religions - it is due to a sick society which permits encouragement of diseased minds for profit motives. (e.g. internet pornography and "sex tourism". )

It would be more constructive to tackle the evils of a so called civilization that implicity allows these evils, AND

leaves people so stressed and distressed they need the "opium" of religion.

It makes you wonder about his life as a priest, wether it was normal for him to abuse kids, this then explains why he finds it hard to condemn priests today, of the same abuse.
