The 28th anniversary celebrations of Republic Day began with a speech on Bayrak Haber by President Dervis Eroglu today.

During his speech, the President gave important messages regarding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Cyprus negotiations process.

In his speech on Bayrak Haber, President Dervis Eroglu noted that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was not established as a bluff or to be a historical joke.

‘The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established to exist forever and to become the symbol of the Cyprus Turkish peoples struggle for freedom and sovereignty’ said the President.

‘The Cyprus Turkish people were able to move towards a brighter future thanks to the 20th of July 1974 Turkish Peace Operation carried out jointly with Motherland Turkey’ said Eroglu adding that ‘we showed our determination to administer ourselves by establishing our own state on the 15th of November 1983’.

Referring to the Cyprus negotiations process the President said that the Cyprus Turkish people desired a solution to the Cyprus problem more than the Greek Cypriot side.

‘We together with motherland Turkey are determined to find a solution, but this does not mean that we will give up on our rights just for the sake of a solution or for our path to the European Union to be opened’ said the President.

Noting that currently the Cyprus negotiations process had become more defined, President Eroglu said ‘we are working so that a successful outcome is achieved from this process’.

‘If we reach the end game and it is not a successful outcome then the Cyprus Turks want to be rid of the unknown future’ said the President.

Good point to raise in the context of possible solutions to the Cyprus 'problem' Canada, especially on the day set aside to celebrate the TRNC: a trend in public discourse away from ethnic identity of Cypriots (Turkish *Cypriots*) to political identity as Turks (*Turks* of Cyprus). Good or bad trend depends on one's point of view, and maybe one's ethnicity.
