Well, what a night. water pouring through windows on the east side of the house which got the brunt of the weather, we did not know until we went to bed that the bedroom floor was full of water. Used all our bathsheets and beach towels to soak it up. We thought our little house was wateproof but it seems that the windows were not sealed round the outsides properly. We went outside at 6 am, the sea must be absolutely boiling, what a frightening sound it is making. So glad we could not afford to live right on the coast.

It is scary but wonderful. I live high up behind the Malpas hotel and i can see the sea in every direction it is still very rough this morning. I have the same problem with rain coming in the landing window the silicon seal they use dries out in direct sun so i will have to get someone with a long ladder to do it again.

Same here, the quality of Cypriot building continues to shine through ! How the hell can a new house have windows that leak ? It's not rocket science, they can make windows that work in the rest of the world, why not here ? If you complain about it you get the cyprus shrug and the reply of ' it doesn't rain that often ' amazing.

The windows are made to a reasonable standard, but its the way they fit them into the structure. They should be fitted into a rebate all around the window and the window cill should have an upstand for the window to sit on. These things would stop any ingress of water, even if the seal on the outside has deteriorated.

| SEE OUR AD' IN CYPRUS TODAY....we do remedial work.often come across this leaking window problem. As stated above-the windows are fitted badly in the first place.sort of "square peg in round hole "syndrome.Could be that the drain holes in the sliding type are drilled in the wrong place so are not working, sealant perished, etc etc......might not be as bad as it looks-just bad workmanship in the first place. | Another problem is that with the extremes of climate materials shrink in the heat and swell in the wet, and different materials "move" at different rates. I have the problem of new metal framed windows set in old wooden frames. Where both the windows and frames are timber they stick in winter, and cant be opened until the heat shrinks them again! Also with new houses I dont think the timber is always properly seasoned or may be installed when damp - I also had this problem with a house in England when a very reputable contractor failed to protect materials from the rain.! A local contractor here did a "easy fix" by putting a "porch" roof over the outside of a back door which kept sticking closed - it seems to afford just enough protection - and provides a lovely shaded sitting place in summer as well, Unfortunately I cant do it at the front because passing traffic knocks corners off my house and would no doubt demolish a "porch" in minutes! |

our current house was built with wooden windows throughout. Year one we were flooded out so replaced them with aluminium ones. Even with the torrential rain of a couple of years ago no rain thru the windows! Wasn't a cheap solution but at least it works. Still no rain coming in overnight and today. Badly built property is just part of normal life here in 'wonderland'.

We had a similar problem, but I think it was the drainage channels in the windows blocked up with dust etc, also the rain came from a differant direction to normal and obviously tested a side of the house that does not normally get it.
