I want to buy a meter or reader that tells me how much or what level of gas fumes are coming from my gas fire as there seems to be a continuous odour from it and I am sure it isn't right. I don't want to wake up dead one morning!!! Anyone know where I can buy one from? Sue

You can buy electronic carbon monoxide detectors but the cheapest way is to get some of the card type discs available from most good diy shops in the uk. I have never seen them in Cyprus but if you know someone coming out here get them to bring some with them. You just position them near the fire and if the colour changes ( goes darker ) then you have a problem.

Forgot to say, you cannot smell carbon monoxide so if there is an odour, it may just be dust that has fallen on the coals ( or radiants ) burning off. But for peace of mind i would get some detectors.

| Just a couple of checks that you can do yourself. If the gas fire is a balanced flue type ( the flue pipe goes through the wall at the rear of the fire ) then you should check that the flue is clear from any vegetation growing around the flue. I have seen in the past flues that were completely covered by ivy and other plants growing into the return air duct. If the fire is fitted into a fireplace, if you look underneath and at the rear of the fire you should see a metal closure plate with a hole cut at the bottom, you should make sure that this hole is clear, it will affect the draw of the flue if it is blocked. | Thanks Geoff, I should have said that my gas fire is one of these portable ones with a gas bottle in the back. It makes a horrible smell sometimes and we have double checked to make sure that the connector is on correctly. Jaybee, I live in Ozankoy, it may be a bit out of your way. Do you know where I could buy one in Girne or Lefkosa? |

Those calor gas fires should be service every 1-2 years. If you put calor gas into the search bar you will find the calor website in the uk, that may help you.

That's one of the reason why we stopped using bottled gas for heating. I was always conscious of the smell from ours and also when I went into other peoples houses. Being liquid gas, they don't exactly help if you have a bit of damp in your property. Plus you're supposed to keep a window open, and that doesn't help with keeping your property warm either. All in all, I don't like them for heating houses.

message 10,even the large gas tanks and large gas bottles are filled with liquid, the liguid vapourises into a gas as and when it [the gas] is released from the tank or bottle, either way the burn process creates alot of water vapour. David

What about asking the company who supply the bottles.? Carbon monoxide they call the silent killer, from what i understand the gas sinks to the lowest point, so if you have a basement or are using it upstairs be very carefull.
