Big plunger with long handle or have you already tried that? I was once in Starling in Girne when someone asked for the powder for the blocked drain and they had it. Bet that was caustic soda, Sorry, don't know what it's called. Perhaps a tc member could help out here. Good luck Pippie

Any good large store will have it in the cleaning section, ask for drain cleaner as stated by Sue msg2, normally comes in small boxes with about 3 sachets inside. Be careful and ware gloves as it will burn your skin.

A plumber once gave me a great piece of advice for a blocked toilet. Put a plastic grocery bag over the end of a mop and use as a plunger...works a treat!! Not sure you want put caustic soda into a cess pit, may end up blowing up!! DD

As stated in posts 2 & 4, it's available at all supermarkets, various brands, if you're not sure that it's the right stuff, check the 'ingredients list' for Sodium Hydroxide. Mr pound sell 1Kg bags of 'Soda crystals', green packaging, contents are Sodium Carbonate Decahydrate - works exactly the same way, by converting non-water-soluble fats into water-soluble soap which can be easily washed down the drain. Used to be called Lye, and was the main method of soap production. Be sure to wear gloves, and avoid splashes onto skin or eyes - rinse off immediately with copious amounts of cold water. If you want to see how efficient it is at dissolving fats and flesh, click here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teodoro_Garc%C3%ADa_Simental It's the principle active ingredient in most oven cleaners and dishwasher detergents, and its extreme corrosive action is responsible for turning glassware cloudy when used as a hot solution - moral: set your dishwasher to low temperature for glassware!
