Just to let you know that we are one of seven customers of DOPI who are testing the new HD boxes prior to its general release. We took delivery last month and we are receiving software updates based on our feedback to DOPI on a regular basis. Namik has said that DOPI is only going to release the new system to a broader base of customers, once he is satisfied that the software is performing well, which is the reason for the test program. First impressions are that the system is looking good subject to ironing out the glitches over the next few days. The HD quality is very good on the channels that support HD, which are a lot……. We very much like the ability to switch from the satellite to the internet mode which I haven’t come across before. We also like the multi-media capability which we are just getting the hang of. If all goes to plan, we believe that the value of the system will be very good when compared with the cost of having several “official” versions from the TV progr

Lally, the 'official tv program suppliers' are not STEALING tv like Dopi are. Please try not to compare costs. One box to one customer with ourselves. Not sharing one card around 100's of customers, hence horrendous profits for the company and bad reception for the poor customers. And they can't get OSN. Gwyn (Washerman's wife)

Re Message 8 (Rowlo) I know that Namik has got the 2nd batch of the new boxes already in the country. I suggest that you email him for all the details regarding costs and delivery of the new system if you are interested, as I don't want to get in the middle. If the interest is out there, I am happy to keep everyone updated with my experiences as the software updates take place. I certainly don't wish to get into debates on official versus unofficial versions of the programs. This needs to be a personal decision taken by anyone considering this and other similar approaches to providing their viewing requirements at a sensible cost.

Just to chuck in my 2 pennyworth on this legal/illegal, official/unofficial, stealing/borrowing thing. Firstly, this country is ostracised by the rest of the world so the rest of the world has no right to expect TRNC to play by their copyright game. When they give the TRNC the slightest recognition in terms of direct flights, direct trade etc. then I might start to care. Secondly, watching pirate TV is no different from buying DVDs for a few tl or the latest version of Windows or MS Office for peanuts - and there are very few of us who haven't done that. Thirdly, what pirates are providing, be it DVDs, software or TV, is not for sale in TRNC so they are not depriving the proper supplier any income - if OSN etc. was legally obtainable here then that would be a different matter. So for me please carry on watching DOPI, or the latest DVDs, or grey market OSN et.al. - the rest of the world deserves it.

Jovial John for me the issue is not abouyt legailty / morality of the different systmes, its about risks to the customers and them understanding those risks. There is a risk when buying a pirated DVD, or downloading a pirate copy of a video from the internet, but the risks to the buyer are negliable. With a sat TV system, especially if you pay up front the risks are higher. With a card sharing systems the risk is that the service will have interuptions because of the nature and means of how the decoding signal is sent to users and channles will change without notice. With grey market product the risk is the supplier will disconnect the customer if and when they find they are using the service outside the area they have rights for. This does not mean people should not use such systems but it dies mean they should understand the potential risk inhernet in them. For an OSN provider here to claim 'officaldom' is to me to actively seek to mislead people.

I fully concur erolz - you pay your money and you take your chance. My comment was prompted by message 9 where one pirate (OK ... grey market supplier) attacks another on the issue of legality - basically to divert attention from the real issue which is the one you make so clear. DOPI have gone through many iterations but they manage to supply some sort of service and apparently now have something new to offer - if OSN is cut off then there will be nothing and no hope of resurrection.

Wagon - each to their own. I just wish certain people would stop this rubbish about legality. According to the world this whole country is illegal so they shouldn't even be living here.

Just a quick update to my last posting numbers 4 & 5 on this thread. The system has been performing fairly well over the last week or so. I am told that, there is a major release of software for the new box due out early to mid next week, which is under final test prior to release. I am looking forward to getting a look at it and put it through its paces…. I’m told that, the current version is being enhanced in the user interface area to make it much more intuitive and automatic. One of the key enhancements will be to automate the switching of the system between the internet and satellite modes automatically as the required program is selected. We have been getting some freezing. DOPI are building a new server this week which, I’m assured will sort that problem out. So, all in all, cautiously optimistic but the new releases/enhancements need to deliver as planned, so fingers crossed...

I’m very sorry for the delay in providing an update on my use of the new DOPI system. My excuse is that I have been receiving both major and minor software releases since before Christmas when I last posted and I wanted to test it well before coming back to those who were interested in my personal opinion on the new system. There have been many teething problems all of which have been taken on board as and when I have fed them back to Namik. As with any new system, in my experience, there are bound to be some problems which are one of the delights of being at the “bleeding edge” of technology. ……. I was getting very acceptable performance from the new box, just prior to all the electricity and network problems we have all been having. Since then I have been running the system over the last couple of days and I am very pleased and happy that it is performing now as well as my earlier recent experiences. Hope this input is useful to you in your decision making processes...

After the lies and promises in the past, I would not touch them with a barge pole. As far as I am concerned they should have given us all the new system free for at least 6 months, as a gesture of good will, as our system never worked after the first 2 weeks and we paid £600 up front about 9 months ago. Why would anyone give them more money up front without any guarantee that the same thing will not happen. IF THEY REALLY WANT TO PROVE THEMSELVES THEN THEY SHOULD LET YOU PAY MONTHLY, AS LEAST YOU WILL NOT LOSE AS MUCH WHEN THE SYSTEM GOES DOWN.
