What has happened to the post? I have been waiting for a couple of bits from UK one parcel and one letter but they have neither appeared in my P.O. Box or the post office itself. All previous mail has luckily arrived although I know it can be hap hazard. However, upon querying the postman, he/they said something to the effect that Istanbul is not sending post across from the UK any longer????

Anyone know anything about it or having similar problems?

Thx

Not heard about not sending post here but we've had numerous cards/letters/parcels gone astray even with correctly addressed labels and in brown envelopes. We tell our family not to bother with presents until we go to the UK or they come here because a lot of hard earned money is wasted, besides all the things that can't be replaced eg drawings from grandchildren.

Thanks wanderer, good to know mail that way is getting through eventually. In this instance though I was more interested in mail sent from the UK to here.

A PO Box in the ROC is the only safe answer. Cost around 30€ (share with friends to ensure it is checked regularly?) . Take your passport to a Post Office over there and ask. The worst that can happen is they say no.

Had mine for a few years with no problems (EBAY etc included).

Msg. 6. That was exactly my reaction!! If it's a rumour then it's the wrong time of the year to be passing it around.

I was the one to posted original message and it was my postie that said it, however, his English is at best mediocre as is my Turkish hence, I wanted some confirmation or proof otherwise ;)

Did not mean to alarm was just wondering what the status was.

I thought all the post came via Istanbul, so if it does, no post would be getting through. Unless it comes through various places.

I haven 't heard about the Istanbul rumour - but it is highly unlikely they would stop forwarding post to TRNC!

Maybe there was some sort of temporary strike or other stoppage there!

My post has been coming through OK - but do rememberthat Bayrams delay things.

Also do remember that both Royal Mail and the TRNC post office get swamped by sheer volume of post over Christmas period, I did a a excerise last year on my own mail and discovered tha 90% of post I lost or had delayed was at this time, and that mostly it was due to people in the UK not allowing adequate time for Chritsmas posting in UK and overseas postage.

I ask people particularly not to send parcels or anything valuable or irreplaceable between lst Dec and 30th Jan - and as for presents - just double up on my Birthday which I hope will mean one really good gift instead of two little ones!

Everyone seems to have a different view BUT all I can say is we do NOT GET ANY POST from the UK UNLESS it is a post card and therefor not worth nicking!!!!

Everything else sent over the last 18 months has disappeared into a black hole, otherwise known as someones pocket. We have complained at the Mukthars and the post office with no joy whatsoever.

All they say is that they deliver all they get................Hmmmmmm. So now we tell friends not to bother.

It seems every time there is a holiday in TRNC + Turkey the mail seems to go missing, this seems to happen at the larger holidays.

If I want a special letter or parcel I ask who ever is sending them to register them so they have to be signed for in Girne post office, I have received all this post to date.

I hope this helps in some way.

Our post is always addressed correctly but stiil goes missing, strangely enough the post that doesn't seem to go astray ( luckily so far !!) are the cards etc. that my daughter-in-law posts from her work so they are franked and therefore look more official.

No mail from Holland was lost in eight years - I only read "Istanbul" in this thread, but am I wrong to remember that "the problem" used to be and maybe still is "London"?

Our post arrives - not many parcels sent - those that were, get delivered - no idea if because of Turkish Cypriot surname or because everything has MERSIN 10 written on it - meaning Turkish side of Cyprus

The lost/delayed post issue raises its ugly head every two or three years! Twice the BRS have had a go at it - the last time they succeeded in persuading several UK companies not to post to North Cyprus at all which was really annoying of them - so please dont start another scare.

There are several reasons for missing post. There used to be a Greek Cypriot sympathiser in a main London Sorting office who crossed out the "Mersin l0 " annotation and replaced it with "Cyprus" so mail got sent to the South! I dont know if he or his successor is still there. Certainly my experience has been that a have had very little mail permanantly lost and most has been from the London area . Less from other parts of UK and none from overseas (Italy, Canada and Australia)

In fact I believe more post goes astray in the UK than does here.

However reasons for problems here are (1) local "posties" are unfamiliar with English names. If you have a common name and only yur initials are ...

quoted your mail may well end up in someone else's box. Advice from local Muhtar is to put full name "eg Mr. Joe Bloggs" rather than "JS Bloggs".

(2) People dont collect their mail. Local Muhtar's office has virtually overflowed with uncollected jpost! If you are a "swallow" and away for two or three months at a time , PLEASE get someone to check your box and forward or return to PO any mail misplaced in your box.

People in UK are so ignorant of overseas posting. An Estate Agent regularly sent my accounts by UK second class post! I frequently get Christmas Cards in January posted a week before Chritmas in UK. And spellings and handwriting leave a lot to be desired - I ended up providing elderly relatives, scatty friends and inefficient

companies with self addressed envelopes and labels!
