At least I got my wish about that bully Johnston getting the bullet .Oh sorry resigning.

Now who gets the poisoned chalice?

Will they appoint an antipodean?

I would like to see Richard Hill/ Jim Mallinder.

Now what is Johnston going to do I sincerely hope not a Sky reporter.

Dave,

Who is Johnston? Never heard of him!

British and Irish Lions legend Sir Ian McGeechan says it is a "disappointing day for rugby" following Martin Johnson's resignation as England manager.

The Bath director of rugby, who appointed Johnson as Lions skipper in 1997, believes his former charge "still had a lot to offer" England and describes him as a "great role model" for players.

Things were on the up under MJ ....ok he lost the plot in NZ with the "rugby boys on tour" mentality .That lack of discipline has cost him ,and he will feel let down .

Is it more that Rob Andrew should have gone first ?

for me we had won 6nations ,and we think we were better than we actually are .

The final display of petulence from the squad was diving off a ferry (what a duck head)

rebuild for next world cup ,or is it just a case of steering the ship ?

OK I added a T you can put your own interpretation on what that may stand for.

Johnsons record is less than 50% win/lose in three years.

I see he now has been shortlisted along with Tyndall as the manager of a 'Dwarf tossing club'

Nick Mallett has already turned it down, that's a surprise.

Apoint a coach with experience and track record not 'a name'

I see this as a great opportunity for England to compleatly restructure, get rid of the "Old Farts' contract the players to the RFU. Limit the amount of overseas players in the premiership. Adopt the NZ system of feeder clubs.

Bring back the Regional competitions and revalue the county championship.

Fran Cotton and Billy Beaumont have been advocating this path for years.

Before the thread deteriorates, imho MJ never really had a chance with NO management or coaching experience. He was also not helped by all the infighting in the RFU.

As far as a succesor is concerned I would like the search to be worldwide I see no reason to think we should have an English manager/coach, nobody else worries.

I thought I had explained the insertion of T-so for ang1706 of Afgan Iraq etc t means t..t.

Johnson was an unmitigated disaster-player yes (although I never forgave him for throwing the punch in the last lions test, that lost us the whitewash) manager no chance, coach no chance.

I would however welcome some comments on overseas players, county rugby and the reintroduction of the regional sides. (similar to Ireland)

Why go for a foreigner. Plenty of talent in English rugby but we must root out the farts at the RFU who have got us into this mess! Rob Andrew is a disgrace to our nation - fact

There is one name that is better than any other contender in the world-

***DEAN RICHARDS****

But the old farts would never give the job to the right man

Hippo your thoughts on MJ as England coach/manager are well documented in the TRNC rugby fraternity. Why do you feel the need to kick a man when he's down ? He was an inspirational player and England captain, I was given some good advice years ago which was "never critisize anyone unless you are as good as them in whatever your critisising" I don't remember ever seeing you lift the Rugby Union world cup above your head, but perhaps I missed that. To put the record straight he actually won more games than lost in the last 2 years. It's a shame it didn't work out but some senior players and R A should share the blame for a poor World Cup.

Apparently former Wallaby coach Eddie Jones has thrown his hat into ring as next England coach to replace Martin Johnson

There must be an out-of-work Rugby League coach who'd take the RU post on .....that's where most of our players go when they're past their best!

Kieth you are quite right, I am not a fan of Johnson and I do disagree with your statement inspirational player.

1997 Lions tour South Africa Manager Fran Cotton - McGeechan coach. During that tour Johnson never once met the fans, all the others did. Johnson had a room by himself. Have a look at the video 'Living with the Lions'

2003 World Cup Manager/Coach Sir Clive Woodward with Phil Larder very much involved with the coaching. One school of thought is that Lawrence Dallaglio was more influential than Johnson.

The point I am making is that Johnsons triumphs are a result of backroom management. I still maintain his management style is one of bullying.

I will grant you despite my personal opinions is that he has made a great contribution to English and British rugby., but as you know well Kieth you are only as good as your last game.

What is interesting now is Graham Henry has announced his retirement, now there's an interesting scenario.

How many ex RL players in the

Premiership Riddles?

The transition is not easy anymore apart from a handful not many have made it. I did post in more detail during the world cup debate which you failed to respond to. If you would welcome some rhetoric on this subject please start.

We agree on L D at least he was indeed an inspirational player and in my opinion the best England player during the world cup winning year. He was and would have been England captain longer only he foolishly got mixed up in a drugs scandal. Stiched up by the newspapers undoughtibly but stupid enough to get involved. Maybe thats why M J prefered to be a little isolated. As to the next manager I can't see anyone rushing to accept while Rob Andrew is around, d you Dave or do you think he's doing a great "none job"

I was always a great fan of Rob Andrew certainly as a player and he did some great stuff with the Falcons.

His track record with the with the RFU is to say the least disappointing.

Now why is a matter of speculation, the RFU needs to drop the men with suits move into the 21C and become proffesional.

Less of the jollys to IRB meeting flying business class and 5 star hotels.

England RFU needs to re inject commitment to grass roots, last notable thing was Development officers and how long ago was that 20 years or thereabouts.

I still maintain that overseas players in the premiership the devaluation of the county championship and the abandonment of the regional sides has been a detrimental step.

English players are just playing too much a full premier season internationals Heineken cup Welsh Anglo is too much.

Contract them to the RFU decide who they will play for and limit the number of games.

Play home grown talent as opposed to ex foreign internationals.
