A.D. 1230: ... and they, all Christians, quarrelled there about "Leavened" vs. "Unleavened Bread". Later, ordered by the Pope and the King of Cyprus, two Greek Orthodox monks found martyrdom through a cruel murder by their fellow-Christians from the competitive Roman Catholic church...

Tomorrow I'm going to find out if there's anything medieval left on the spot...

Post deleted , very strong unjust statement , not sure what you mean't by that remark , or if indeed you worded it wrongly , nonetheless religious prejudices will not be tolerated . ....... Simbas

Mr Doodleman.......I find your sectarian comments offensive and frankly disgusting. This should be removed. There is no place in civilized society for this verbal pornography.

Some comments in this thread, about an almost 800 years old historical fact in Cyprus (still commemorated by believers in the South of this island), are really funny. To put it mildly.

WHY DO YOU CHOSE TO TAKE IT AS AN ATTACK ? Do you dispute any of the information in the links did you know that Himmler the architect of the final solution was a devout catholic ?

I don't see what this has to do with Himmler. He may have THOUGHT that he was a devout Catholic. I don't see what has that got to do with something that happened about 800 years ago.

Can this thread be closed please?

No, leave it open.

If you leave it open for a thousand years or so the DutchCrusader might say something interesting by accident, eventually.

No problem with this thread being closed but it will not be for now unless you are Mr Vince, if you were Mr Vince one of the chosen few yours would have also continued. Can the rest of you not see this !!!

Just take a look at the post title

TWO GREEK ORTHODOX MONKS murdered by Roman Catholics

An editor would check and double check the facts and not use such a provocative title unless they wanted to dupe the masses into clicking on to another link to their own website.

I don't know what the problem is. The title is sensationalist to draw attention to the thread but that is about it. It's hardly a crime.

What if the links are to his own website...so what??...It's not harming anyone is it??

Can anyone tell me why religion seems to be the biggest cause of grief and suffering in this world of ours? Each one appears to preach peace and understanding but they all remind me of the star trek song "We come in peace shoot to kill"

I think DC's post was perfectly harmless. It opened with the date to immediately put it in context. Clicking the link explained everything and even gave a reference to the book from which he obtained the story. Maybe a slightly sensationalist title but that is hardly justification for the vitriol from Mr. Vince and subsequently his supporters.

Maybe I was one of the few who saw the post from Mr. Vince which was removed by the mods, but I can assure those who didn't that is was offensive in the extreme and completely uncalled for - I am frankly surprised that he wasn't banned.

I completely fail to see why several people are so worked up about this matter - but then there are several people on this board who will pick a fight about anything....especially if it is posted by DC.

By the way - I am Catholic, Roman or otherwise!

Jovial John,

I totally agree with you. I too seen the thread and commented on it before it was removed.

I also cannot believe that people are getting so worked up about it. It was a harmless thread with a sensationalist title. Nothing wrong with that. People are just making this into a big issue when it isn't.

There does seem to be certain people who seem to 'have it in for DC', constantly moaning about his threads etc. Honestly, it's like bullying in the school playground!

I wrote headlines for the newspaper I used to work for for 30 odd years: a headline should tell the story in an attractive way to draw attention to the story*.

I find it very interesting to get lessons from amateurs how to write a headline.

* The number of views in this thread is proof that I'm right.

It is hard to please everyone at the same time but some of us do appreciate your historical threads. Keep them coming.

▶ AngelaT, I've had far worse letters in my time at the newspaper than a couple of posts on this board. Then and now: in the bin. And forgotten.

What a load of twaddle this thread is!

You would be all better concentrating on what is happening in Cyprus in 2011?

I am so happy I don't live amongst you, I am so happy I don't live amongst you............................is now my mantra.............. I need to keep working and using my brain for goodness sake use your brain for the good of the future and not the bloody past!

There is nothing wrong with having an interest. People like to know the history and culture of the place they are living in.

Victim, it is not obligatory to read historic threads.

There are plenty of "brain-stimulating" topics here for you : best Sunday roast, home-made chips to die for, wonderful jokes copied from the net etc.etc.etc.
