And this weekend, a week before he turns 82, Gudgin will be doing the honours for the final time.

'I will be sad. I will miss it. It's part of my life,' Gudgin told me a day before his final broadcast.

'I've had a marvellous career, I've been so lucky. Part of it has been being in the right place at the right time.'

Gudgin said he doesn't so much suffer from nerves any more, which is not surprising when you consider he read racing and rugby results for nearly 20 years after joining Grandstand in 1976, before taking over as the main reader of football results in 1995.

We've all heard some unlikely football results in our time, and surely everyone that has grown up with the game has at one stage said 'East Fife 5 Forfar 4'.
