Woollyone. UK Citizens cannot be exempt from national service in the TRNC, Ask Micky Lane, he did his time. Only Turkish Cypriots born outside the TRNC can apply for the purchase exempt from national service.

If you're thinking a trying to buck the system here, is it not a bit stupid to advertise the fact on C44?

I'm fairly certain you can pay a sum of money in lieu of doing the service itself if you are foreign born. I'm eligible myself via marriage and was told that if I paid something like 4,000 pounds I wouldn't have to actually serve as serving in a foreign military would mean that I lost my original citizenship. I just didn't see the point in citizenship myself.

Mahdel.....WRONG..... Foreigners regardless of age have to do Military Service and you can not pay to get out of it.....You can, however, get out of it on medical grounds....

Correction if you are a TRNC citizen and live outside the TRNC you can pay to get out of the national service in 2 ways, 1 Pay 6000GBP and do nothing 2 Pay 4000GBP and do 1 month even if you do not hold a TRNC citizenship and you are born outside of TRNC, if one of your parents is a TRNC citizen by birth or by registraion, TRNC goverment still counts you as a TRNC national. A freind of mine recently come to Cyprus from the UK for a holiday on a british passport born in London and when he went to leave the TRNC via Ercan, The police officer at the passport control refused his exit, and had to go to the army office in Nicosia before, he could leave, He was given a document that in the future,if he stays in TRNC for longer than 60 days in an year he will be called to army, he aslo had to go a get a TRNC ID and passport before he was allowed to leave. The same thing happened to me in 1998.

Erkin. This is not what you stated in your first post, you said by marrage, not having one Cypriot parent. If one of your parents are Cypriot then if they apply for your KIMLIK card you will have to do national service or pay as you stated. If you marry a Cypriot you can apply for a KIMLIK card, if this is granted you will have to do national service with no chance of paying.

Message 6 says you can get out of it on medical grounds, is this true, and what is the criteria ? How about honourary citizens, say someone like David Haye, does he also have to wear the Khaki also ?
