I'm posting this on behalf of Nicky who is organising this market as she doesn't have access to the net at the moment. So, any comments - please don't shoot the messenger! The market held at the Açmenya restaurant on Thursdays finished earlier this year as we moved in to the hot summer. It will be back on again from this Thursday 24th November at a new time of 11am - 3pm. All buyers and sellers are welcome. The first month will be free for all stallholders. After that is to be advised. Nicky is not working to earn any money from this event. So any charges will depend solely on the decision of the restaurant management. Hopefully they will decide that the stall holders work hard enough to bring a market to their restaurant and attract customers for them too, so that the market should continue to be held without cost to any stall holders.

... cont'd from before, At the moment we're expecting to see books, clothes, local arts and craft, electricals, perfumes, persian glass art and tabe ware. There's also a stall buying and selling gold so you can earn some cash too from your old gold. And the restaurant will have special offers available for lunches. If anyone is interested in selling food, that is also welcomed. When I spoke to Nicky earlier today she said that she would like to encourage people who like to bake and want to sell their cakes and bread as that was very popular when the market was running previously.

By the way, for those that don't know the Açmenya Restaurant: Driving from Girne towards Lapta, at the Golden Lady Statue on the left, bear left then take the next left turn. Perhaps 50 metres along, the Açmenya is the second restaurant on the right hand side. There is ample parking. Stall holders will need to be there in plenty of time for their table to be allocated and to give them time to set up. Oh, for anyone worried about the current weather conditions, the market is all indoors!

Sorry I don't have any contact details for Nicky. Last she said to me was that anyone who wants a stall is very welcome to turn up, there'll be lots of tables already set up for stallholders. Tables will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Why wasn't it advertised in the paper, or did I miss it? While I wish you every success, how is anyone going to know about it, if they don't look at this forum. Last time, however much we asked, Acmenya wouldn't put boards outside, or at the bottom of the road by the Iron Lady. Perhaps they will do better this time, otherwise it is such a disappointment for the sellers, when there are hardly any customers.

O agree Stella. and sadly I cannot come this week as I have already made other plans. But maybe the message could be circulated to friends via Facebook. But if I had known I would have tried to put somethiing in The Star, and that is why I also would have gone this week to take pics, etc, but too late for this week. So , like you, I DO hope it is a success!

Definitely agree Stella, last time the market was on I never saw any road signs indicating any market. When I walked around I used to hear people saying things like "I didn't know this was on, it was by complete accident I came". In fact I only knew about it through a friend telling me. The restaurant can't hope to be successful with this market if they rely on cheap advertising through word of mouth. If the restaurant reads this, please take note, you can only use 'word of mouth' when you've established a name for yourselves. If you have stall holders willing to give up their time to try to get a market going for you, support them back by doing some advertising for them. Look at the Sunday car boot how successful that has been, the little extra it cost to do some advertising has done the trick.

You're all absolutely right. My impression from speaking to Nicky is that she WILL listen to us. She told me that she's not taking anything from the restaurant for organising this event and has suggested to them that they use any money they would have given to the previous event organiser to spend on advertising this time. In any case, if you're thinking of having a stall you've got the first month for free. If the restaurant decide to shoot themselves in the foot again after that first month, that's up to them. Hopefully it'll look like a market for a month! And if you're looking for something to do on Thursdays, especially if the weather is no good, you know where to go for a wander around.

Just a quick message to remind you of the market happening tomorrow at Açmenya Restaurant in Alsancak from 11am til 3pm. If you're a potential stallholder please arrive early for your table to be allocated. Remember tables are free for the first month so why not take advantage! If you're usually a car booter on one of the Sunday markets, why not take advantage of an extra day of potential sales! And customers, please remember wallets and purses!!! Just in case!

Thanks for asking Marion. Yes, the market will definitely be on again next week. It was a success in terms of the numbers and range of stalls that were there but sadly it was a little poor on the customer front. A few people had some sales which was nice for them, the bookman is always a popular one, and the restaurant also had some people in dining so they too will be happy. Although I didn't make any sales this week I was happily giving out money to people who were kind enough to bring their gold treasures in to me. So hopefully I made someone happy! But it was the first week and we all know that any new market will take time to take off. I believe Nicky is planning to walk the streets sticking leaflets on cars for this next week and some of the stallholders are pulling together to get some signs made for the roadsides. We've got to persevere, nothing ever became a success without a little hard work, did it. Well done to everyone who was there, see you next week.

I wish I had known earlier about advertising. Perhaps we could have done something last week with leaflets etc in the area. And sorry you did not have a good turn out. Let's hopoe the word gets out this week and that you get a good turn out. I hope to come so with my men folk that is an extra three, but I am not sure about what any of us may be buying.
