A poll by Demos shows that Muslims are more patriotic about being British than the rest of the population.

Asked if they were proud to be British 83% of Muslims said yes, the rest of the population scored 79%.

Muslims were also more optimistic about Britains future than the rest. Only 31% of muslims said Britains best days were over compared to 45% for the rest of society.

Experts believe Muslims patriotism is borne from their need to defend themselves against hostility and the fact that they find Britain so much more liberal than Islamic states.

People voted for what they considered British best national treasures - Shakespeare 75%, national trust 72%, armed forces 72%, union jack 70%, pound 69%, nhs 68%, monarchy 68%, bbc 63%, british sporting achievements 58%, the beatles 55%, legal system 51%, Parliament 47%

Are you proud to be British?

Do you think Britains best days are behind them?

What is your favourite national symbol?

Big apology to the non Brits on this

Re: Msg 1, "Are you proud to be British? "

Dear Douglas,

You can see my answers in Msgs 49,56,60 when we touched this topic not so long ago:

I also liked the quote provided by martin D41:

“Patriot: the person who can holler the loudest without knowing what he is hollering about.”

Mark Twain

P.S. I consider myself a person (and not a bad one ).

P.P.S. Had enough of flags and other patriotic nonsense when lived in the US.

Dear Little miss proper

Its interesting that you refer to a thread about the British being mean.

The Brits are proudest about volunteering. "The key thing that Brits were proud of is that British people volunteer more than people from other countries and that we are more socially engaged" said Max Windcowie, the reports author.

Everyones identity is made up of lots of elements. Our history, memories, values, beliefs etc all play in to an identity. Being English is part of my identity as is being a person. I can hold all of these elements loosely without a need to be patriotic. You wont find an English flag flying outside my window, but I can recognise my place of birth. Just like many Cypriots recognise their heritage.

I find it unbelievable that you make the leap, from my asserting that I am English to my being a loud patriot. Would you say a Cypriot who recognises their place of birth (or any other country) as a loud patriot and by default a bad person?

Re: Msg 9,

Darling sensitive Douglas,

I think it is you who made the leap.

In my message I only expressed MY OWN views on the subject, and nowhere did I imply that anyone

(and specifically YOU) who doesn't share the same views is a lesser person or a loud patriot.

This also doesn't mean that I don't respect your views and opinions or don't enjoy the discussion or debate.

You write: "Our history, memories, values, beliefs etc all play in to an identity..."

I couldn't agree more!

If in doubt, watch the last night of the Proms. Watch the Cenotaph service on Remembrance day

This allows everyone whatever their race of creed to Demonstrate their Britishness.

There is usually little doubt in my mind, where my loyalties lie.

Jingoistic...I hear. Piffle!

Do I take it that every ex pat that chose to live in The TRNC, turn their televisions off.?

There are plenty of Muslims chosen the path of Britishness. Just look in your Doctors Surgery, and many of

them are Doctors!

Im patriotic to be British, granted more passionate about being Scots, but I think we are a nation that is losing its traditional self belief in Great Britain and think we need to evaluate our place in the world.

Yes Muslims are more patriotic as Amir Khan and other sportsmen show......... the England Football Team dont even know their National Anthem. So thats a slap in the face to yous English you should be ashamed !!

Rugby Players put them to shame especially the other Home Nations when belting out their National Songs!!

Jeannie love your comment , its horrible to admit but its true !!

English footballers in particular should be ashamed, Im not saying that Scots, Welsh and Irish are much better, but bring on Rugby and credit to League as was delighted to watch the English Team all sing the National Anthem yesterday before Australia Game!

@ msg 1, ilovecyprus: (...) * Shakespeare..?! 75%..?! What was the question? "Do you agree that Shakespeare is the best British national treasure? Yes or yes?".

Shakespeare - in a country where 'newspapers' from the gutter, like the Sun are often setting the trend?

Come on.

P.S. If 'being British' makes you feel better or even outstanding from the rest of mankind - fine. But I feel European and can only hope for the future of our children and grandchildren that we get rid of all nationalistic nonsense as soon as possible. Nationalism has been the curse of Europe or two millennia - wars were always the sad result. It's been enough.

"What was the question?"

I dont know DC. People may have been asked to select from a number of icons.

"If 'being British' makes you feel better or even outstanding from the rest of mankind - fine"

Who on here has stated that being British is being better than the rest?

Personally I am not very impressed with someone who calls themselves European. Its just nationalism on a larger scale. Empires are just as dangerous as countries, if not more.

The people who I have been most impressed by, are those that call themselves 'world citizens'. Their identities are more global, their solutions more international and often they still have enough room to recognise their country of birth.

Talking of Brits, I watched a programme yesterday that made me angry. It was about Alan Turing.

*In 1936 he wrote a seminal paper on computing. It was ground breaking stuff and every facet of modern computer technology is grounded in his work.

*During the 2nd world war he broke the German enigma code. As a consequence he saved many lives and shortened the war.

*After the war he wrote another radical paper which has laid the foundations for artificial intelligence

*In 1953 he came up with a mathematical formula to explain morphogenesis.

This guy was a walking talking genius. Perhaps the greatest mind ever.

He was gay and he naively admitted homosexual acts. He was faced with the choice of going to prison or to be chemically castrated. He chose the latter. The chemicals damaged his body and muddled his mind.

He committed suicide at 41. His best days were still ahead of him. Just think what he could have created if he lived in to his 70's. What an absolute tragedy.

I have a problem with the logic of "A poll by Demos shows that Muslims are more patriotic about being British than the rest of the population. Asked if they were proud to be British 83% of Muslims said yes, the rest of the population scored 79%."

As it appears to assume that all those who are not Muslims are British, when as we all know the population is a melting pot of many nationalities... e.g. many UK residents have allegiance to homelands far away, we should only expect people to be proud Britons if they are treated with respect. Sadly it's often not the case. And I don't believe asking them to leave if they don't feel respected enough to call themselves proud Britons is the answer....
