I have been told that the population census is on the 4th December and as my wife and I leave for a short break to the UK on that day we will have to have permission to leave the country. Is this correct ,assuming the census is on the 4th ? Can anyone explain the procedure for getting permission to leave the country on census day ? Thanks for any advice given.

If you have a valid flight ticket then you should not have a problem and if you are stopped by the Police then you may have to fill in a census form at the roadside. Allow a bit extra on your travel time to cater for this.

BRS Government Liason Officer has still not been able to ascertain for certain that it's been changed from December 4th, so I suspect we can safely assume it is, but don't totally rely on it though. The first people to know of any change will be T C papers and TV!! Sundays 4th December Church service has been changed to Saturday evening - just in case.

Oh another b other. we have to take our son to the airport that day. so do we need permission to travelto Ercan???? what a pain. Last time there was a census we were in the south, and no one wanted toknow. we even went to give our details (having e mailed before we went) and was told' As you were out of the country it doesn't matter.' Always being willing to conform to rules and regs, I found that a little mystifying. But of course god will be happy, Tango 1 cos he gets a nice lot of praise a little early that week. Just like the roman Catholics who say that Saturday night is valid for Sunday.

There is only one God, no matter what religion you follow to worship him. Here is not for that debate though. Agreed, the census sounds like a pain in the backside. Can't wait for 5th Dec.

Have been to check and anyone travelling that day must have a valid reason. The census has not been confirmed as the 4th Dec but we have been told that we must go to the council offices in Girne three days before where we will be given the paper work that will permit us to travel out of the TRNC on the day of the census. We will have to take passports and proof of flights. The above information was given to us in the Mukhtar's office after they had phoned the Girne Council office. The reason for the three days before advice was because the date had not been confirmed yet. There will also be a third person who will go with us to bring my car back and we were told that he should be able to get travel documents as well. Hope this helps anyone else travelling around on census day

Thanks message 13. For once you are not an unlucky number. We will pop into the police station in the week (as in next week) and ascertain what's what and get the relevant permission. and yes, it does indeed help. So thanks a million.

Welll I reckon getting our son to the airport is an emergency service, and if the police will not allow both of us, surely they will allow one of us. I don't understand what you mean Erkin by sdaying 'if flying out of Ercan you will need to get there before the shutdown comes in effect' but that is 6a.m. isn't it, and our son is flying out just before 6p.m. which means he needs to be there by around 4p.m. which means we must leave at 3a.m. So, don't understand. also does it mean that flights will be delayed. Now I am REALLY confused.

Hi Marion This morning i spoke with the police Hq in Lefkosa, according to the info they gave, no person is permitted on the streets after 7am.Unless you work in the hospital or other emergency services, or u need to visit the hospital for emergency. All flights will continue to arrive and depart as normal but all passengers must be at the aiport before the 7am dealine. All entries into TRNC via Ercan will continue as normal but incoming passengers will have to remain at the aiport untill the the country re-opens again at 18:00 as no taxi or Kibhas services will be operating untill after 18:00. All border crossings between TRNC and the south will also be closed and person arriving into the TRNC via the south will be kept at the border again untill 18:00 any person in the street between the hours of 7am and 6pm will be arrested and taken to the police station until the census have been completed.

Marion if your sons flight is at 6pm then sorry to inform you but looks like an early wake up call for you and your son. You must be back in the comfort of your home by 7am or u have to stay with your son at the airport until 18:00, if you do choose to stay at the Airport and want to be count in the census then you need to take documents (Kimlik) if you are eligable to be counted. Even I as a Tc can not be counted as i live on the Greekside, How nice is that.:( The purpose of the census is not just for a count, but also to see how many Tc and how many mainlanders are resident in TRNC, this is a bit of a rusehd job, as the Gc cypriot goverment want the numbers in accordence with the UN.

Hmm. And I thought they said theywould make the next one easier. I wish now David hd booked into Larnaca, as I could hve gone over the day before and had a mini holuiday. As it is, it is pergatory. I don't do mmorning, and I guess I owuld have to stay at the airport , or I can see that he would never want to return here with such barbaric impositions on a holiday maker! are taxis allowed to operate??? If so, we willk put him in one of those. Or maybe I should hire an ambulance as an emergency service?????????????????????/

LOL Marion u can put your son in a Taxi at 6am yes, but i don't think that many taxi drivers will risk being stuck at the airport all day, if they do take him to the airport, I am sure they to will want to be back at home by 7am.

You think this is bad Marion try being in Turkey when the census is being done. They shut down the country from 6am untill 10pm and still can not get the figures right. outdated system of counting people like sheep.

İ think as with most things over here, there is a lot of speculation as to what will happen and what to do, if i was you i would go the district council a few days before the census is due(thats if it has not been changed again by then) and get your permission and then take it to the police station and confirm and then you can be sure from all sides as to what is required as they never know the exact protocol until just beforehand.

What makes a person 'eligible' to be included in the census? Erkin, you mentioned it's just for checking how many TCs and mainlanders are here. So if someone knocks on your door and you're an ex-pat living there will they just say thank you and go away?

Med One. As stated before, when they call they will need to see your passport, it is to count all people living in the TRNC, if you are not on there docs they will add you to there figures with an address. If you refuse to answer the door and a neighbour tells them there is someone living at that address they will call the police.

If you are an ex pat who has been given a Kimlik then you will be counted in the actual census, otherwise they will fill in the form just to show how many other nationalities are resident in the TRNC. Yes all homes will be checked, in some respect this is good, beacuse from this we can also see how many people are living in Greek Kocan homes as well, this is another reason for the census. As the housing issue is one of the biggest problems of the talks between the goverments. Please not that if the person from the census office suspects that there are people in the home, as stated in MSG 27 the police can use force to gain entry into the house.

Your census is taking place on 4th December according to BRT TV/Radio. "A full day curfew will be imposed during the population census. A nation-wide census will be carried out on the 4th of December, it has been announced."

Have been to the Council office and all sorted. Photo copies of flight details, the details of my wife, myself, the car driver plus the car. The council off ice is the build ing by the hospital, not the tax office but the one in front and the office is up the stairs and at the top turn right then left and its the office on the left. Young man in there ( who speaks very good English ) and a lady and both very helpful.

But if people decide to go away for the weekend as Carian has said in msg 39 to avoid all the bother of the curfew, won't that make a mess of the figures regarding how many people live in the TRNC?! Will hotels have the responsibility of ensuring all guests know they can't leave their hotel that day? And, what about people who live in the UK and rent out their property here, they may not know about the census and if they have people renting out on that day, suppose they venture out to go off enjoying their holiday, what might happen to them??? I have so many questions, I've never been through this before, and I can understand other people's frustrations.

I would have thought that it would be in the interests of the ex-pat community to make the biggest showing possible rather than run away to avoid a little inconvenience. The TRNC government will notice how may ex-pats appear to be here and the degree to which they listen to our concerns will be influenced by that.

Unless you have someone arriving or leaving, I can't see the problem of being asked to stay indoors for one day of the year. Why is everyone making such a big deal of it.? Last time it all went off very quietly, and people just stayed in for the day.
