Just back from a soggy wet week in TRNC. Thought we would call in to the Ravine Bar for fish and chips. Should have been a pleasant experience but totally spoilt by bunch of locals sitting around the fire smoking and coughing their lungs up. Whatever happened to the smoking ban. Never go there again.

Alan, far to many are not abiding with the ban and I am sure they will pay the price as customers defect.

Perhaps it was the smoke from the fire causing them to Cough..or the Diesel fumes from the passing Buses/Lorries....

For your information the Ravine has a brand new cast iron stove that does not smoke and the road is no closer than any other bar along the main road so get your facts correct before you slag another hard working business off in public.

what a shame, the smell of smoke when eating is disgusting, not to mention the health issues, and the stink of a place after the smoking has finished, I also find that smokers also stink realy bad, also their breath is pretty vile. :((,oh and brown teeth and smelly hair and clothes.

Message 5 - We would have in normal circumstances, we had just had a powercut and most of the eateries we wanted to go to were also experiencing this, so it was kind of 'Hobson's choice' really!!

Normaly if you wish to smoke you have to go outside, and they are quite stricked about this fact.Ive known that they leave the sliding doors unlocked for this reason,so people can sit/stand just outside the doors and ashtrays are provided for this as well outside.Sorry you had a bad exsperience as the food is always good and always a friendly smile. Will have a word with Hasan about this as well.

out of pure interest going back say 5 years or more when smoking was rife in pubs, clubs and restaurants all along the med what did non-smokers do then.

The irony is that we intended to try out the much-praised Hillside that night but they were in the middle of a power cut when we got there so we moved on. As we returned past Hillside after the Ravine debacle the lights were back on and they were frying away like whirling dervishes. Fate dealt us a cruel blow that night.

Martin is right. Smokers can drive out of bars etc., why can't I stop vehicles taking a short cut to said bars down a quiet village street, and filling my house with their exhaust fumes!

Martin

If the cap fits wear it I say. I can't believe that anyone has such a phobia that they are saying "fate dealt them a cruel blow" at the Ravine that night. Saddo's

To be honest we use The Ravine a lot in the summer. Fish and chips are really good. The last couple of times we have been there people have been smoking inside. They have been standing by an open patio door, all this does is blow the smoke back in our direction ! So we don,t go there now. Be back next summer.

Funny, never seen any complaint on here from smokers saying the smell of food put them off of there delicious cigarette.

Maybe that's why some go outside to smoke.

Because quite simply. Rules are made to be Broken.

Have you ever broken a rule. IE have you ever gone over the speed limit, or prked where you should not.

What is the expession Let them who cast etc. et.

Also what happened to live and let live. Do you really want TRNC to become like the UK.

Its amazing that someone can be ripped off by a builder for thousands, but won't name them on the forum, but for a cigarette in a bar you could ruin a business by naming the place, that really sucks.

I was wondering what you done before this ban came in on your holidays as everywhere had smoking.

Why for goodness sake can't people just complain to the owner instead of hiding behind a computer to winge.

What amazes me is the aggresion of some of these anti smokers.

I smoke a little bit can't have a glass of wine with out one. had a few ciggys on Sat eve. Will no doubt have one next time I have a glass of wine, may be not until week end who knows.

But I have neither brown teeth or stinking clothes as mentioned earlier.

Some people seem very very angry towards people who smoke.

I remember my mom, ( a reformed smoker) of the worst type possible.

I rented a house out in the UK opposite where my mom lived, a really nice couple leased it.

I was chatting to my mom one day about her neighbours and mentioned what a nice couple they seemed.

My mom's reply was, "I have no time for them they both smoke".

philbailey. Is that a question you are asking or are you making a statement, have you any evidence? petty rules here wouldn't make me want to move to somewhere where there doesn't appear to be any rules at all.

Can i just say it was not just a cigarette, it was several people smoking continuely. When you are eating this is not a plesant experience. I dont think it would have achieved anything complaining, because as someone mentioned earlier, these are locals that give their custom all year round. I am I correct in thinking this is an open forum, why then is it not acceptable to voice ones opion about something like this, i dont see it as hiding behind a computer at all! I doubt it will affect their custom, from the response on this topic, they will have plenty of smokers to serve.

And what a lot of angst shown towards non-smokers here by the smokers.

Having posted a similar thread last week, though, I am not surprised by that angst.

We all have rights and with rights come responsibilities.

I have the right not to smoke. Smokers have the right to smoke.

I take the responsibility of leading a healthy lifestyle seriously.

Smokers take responsibility of their own health issues.

However restaurant owners do not have the right to let smokers smoke in restaurants in the eyes of the law.

They have the responsibility to provide a designated smoking area, enclosed/unenclosed outside.

They have a responsibility to non-smokers and asthma sufferers to keep tobacco fumes out of restaurants.

As for comments about making this like the UK, get a life as Rowlo is so fond of saying, most of the world has woken up to the dangers of smoking and passive smoking, so come on it's time to wake up and smell the coffee!

I've never smoked, never even tried one, but I am overall on the side of the smokers.

I believe it is a great thing to do, and they (at least the educated ones who really understand all the benefits) should encourage their children and grandchildren to smoke, and should assist them financially.

Where there are laws to prevent the young and innocent being exposed to all the benefits too, (they should have to buy their own, or get their smoking friends to) the better educated should encourage their children to break the laws, and send the message that they are excempt from the rules of society.

Now, anyone who has broken these rules, and perhaps their builder has broken 'rules' too, maybe they will understand that it's all just a matter of scale. If you are a rule breaker, no good crying wolf.

How many years ago was it that asbestos was allowed in houses, and to be used on fire doors?

Hopefully the next thread will be from someone telling us how great that is too.

Its not as if there arent plenty of places that do forbid smoking completely. If you find one that wants to keep local custom(and sadly so many locals are losing their familiary places to Brits imposing their own ideas) by takinga risk to accommodate long standing customers on a beastly night, why not just go somewhere else that caters to your preference instead of trying to make the owners suffer because they obviously disagree with your prejudices.
