Is it possible to tile over a travertine floor, or must the travertine be taken up first? I am fed up with mine, it has developed pot holes, dull and rough patches. I have just paid to have it filled and repolished, the filling never happened and the polishing does not extend into the corners, round the loo etc. Another shoddy job. I really would appreciate other people's experiences with this.

Yes you can tile over it. Providing they are fixed soundly then no problem at all. But make sure they are cleaned and free of anything that could prevent the adhesive sticking. There is a tile shop in town if you turn left just after Sun Island Tours on Colony rd. They are very helpful and do have the correct fixitives and grouts etc. In general when we tiled on tile, (or marble etc.) it was normally just a straight forward stick down job.

If you "tile over" which seems to be a good remedy do not forget that as you raise the level of the floor you may have to take into account such things as the rubber jackets under toilets being long enough to reach the sewers without leakage.
