Since maggots are fly larvae and flies frequently carry disease, maggots can be a source of infection as well. I'd get yourself checked out.

Do like they did in Nelson`s day, tap the edge of the biscuit on the table, this dislodges the weevils.

The heating process in making the biccies would kill any germs; that aside, bugs are protein, so wouldn't worry - but would tell the shop and get your money back

There have been previous posts about this - but I cant work out how to give a link! Seems a fairly frequent problem - somehow the little blighters get into the food before it is packaged and the hot humid climate encourages them to grow. Seems to be no foolproof answer but general hygience and transferring dry goods to airtight containers when purchased prevents them spreading into other goods. My Grandad always used to say "Everyone has to eat a bit of dirt before they die",but I just wish I hadnt had a couple of Ryvitas before I read the jpost!

thanks for all the info, I love ryvita too but would never eat another one now, wouldnt be so bad if when you opened the packet you would see them, but for them to be embedded into the biscuit quite frankly takes the biscuit if you ask me!!!

Oh my God, I have just bought a packet today, I love them with Marmite and am now scared to even open the flipping packet! Very very grateful for the warning though, and I can tell you that if there is anything crawling or embedded in them, they are going back to the shop - I have now retrieved my receipt from the bin!

Oh well, I'll be eating my protein at the same time. It won't stop me eating them, perhaps will be a bit more careful though. Has anyone thought to contacft the Ryvita people. I'm sure they would take action if they were to receive a whole load of Emails from the same country at the same time. Don't forget all of our stuff comes in from Turkey and heaven only knows how long it sits there before being shipped over here. It's no wonder that a lot of the stuff we eat is very close to the eat or sell by date is it?

I have bought many a pack of Ryvita both here and in the south and so many of them have the tiniest of holes in. I have always thought that the paper packet they are wrapped in needs to be better because the handling and storage of these packs nearly always leads to small holes or tears and they only have to be small as Marcos says in msg 29 and your packet is infested. The seals always look in tact but carefully inspect that actually packet around the corners etc

Now that's impressive. Riveta must be monitoring message boards all over the world to pick up complaints - and acting on them. Good for them. Just checked a packet and see it has an advert for an airtight tin to keep them in - I wonder if it is available here. Please let us know how you get on Ozzie

Further to your post on the providing us with the information regarding the purchase of Ryvita Muesli Crunch that you had found to be infested which you purchased from a Store in North Cyprus. We can fully imagine your dissatisfaction and upset at finding this, and I would like to take this opportunity to explain some of the steps we take in order to prevent contamination. All our products are manufactured and packed under strict hygienic conditions, and besides our many stringent internal quality assurance checks, we are audited annually by an independent company to ensure that we continue to meet the standards set by the British Retail Consortium, and have regular independent pest control visits every 6 weeks. Our ingredients are bought to a high standard specification, and on receipt are checked for quality, freshness and compliance including any evidence of pest damage. cont....

All our Crispbread products are produced using the latest technology in an environment where all entrance points such as doors and windows are pest proofed. As a precaution the factory is baited with pheromone moth traps, insectocutor type ultra violet flying insect units and insect monitors, which again are regularly monitored. The manufacture of Crispbread is a continuous process which involves the creation of a rye based dough, which is thinly spread on the oven belt and baked at 300ºC for 12 minutes giving a core temperature of 100/150ºC, at which insects and their eggs cannot survive. Normally they are destroyed at temperatures at or above 40ºC. Having been baked the Crispbread is then passed through a cooling tunnel, cut and then packed in the continuous wrapping lines. On average the whole process takes 30 minutes (including the bake time) with approximately 65 tonnes being produced a day. Which when you consider the speed and volume of the operation, cont......

this should preclude the possibility of post bake contamination. Without the batch codes from the packet we are unable to investigate this fully. However, Muesli Crunch has a shelf life of 9 months so this would indicate that the packet you had would have been produced no later than February 2011. At Ryvita we store finished product for a maximum of two weeks before it enters the distribution/export network and whilst we can fully appreciate that this has been a very upsetting experience, we do everything in our power to ensure our products leave our factory in perfect condition. However, once our products enter the distribution network it is impossible to track how they are stored. We are therefore of the opinion that this packet became infested after it left our care. cont....

We feel that this is an isolated and regrettable incident. May we apologise most sincerely for the dissatisfaction and inconvenience you have been caused. I would like to assure you that we take a great deal of pride in making our products, and we hope you will continue to support us in the future. If you would kindly send me your address I would be pleased to send you a Ryvita Tin as a gesture of goodwill. Yours sincerely Hannah Hawkins Consumer Care Supervisor
