My daughter goes there, she's in the last year now and has been there for the last 4 years, there are a couple of other english kids. She likes it, the teachers are nice and most of the time helpful! Two of my boys have both graduated from Alsancak and now attend Lapta Yavuzlar. If you turn left off the main road just opposite the new Starling supermarket, go to the top and then turn right the Primary schools are just on the left there are 2 buildings, the closest being for years 3, 4 & 5 and then just a little further down the road is the little school. (not in size just in kid ages!!)

Hi authentichoccie, just a few questions... Did your kids know any or much Turkish before going to school there? Do you speak Turkish yourself and if not how did you get on communicating with the teachers? Also, how would you rate the level of education, say, compared to the UK system? Thankfully I've a couple of years before I have to think about schools but in the current economic climate I can't see how we could afford to pay for schooling. Thanks in advance!

Hi Susie No my kids did not know much turkish before they went there (they went to Sunny Lane for a year first and didnt learn much turkish there!) I don't speak much turkish my self but the headmistress and several of the staff speak reasonable enough turkish for us to communicate somehow! My kids still have a little trouble with some of the written stuff as they often know what they want to write but not sure how to write it! The standard of education is good, but as there is obviously no english history we try and teach the kids some ourselves! We don't want them forgetting their roots!! In my opinion if you are looking to stay here in North Cyprus then the state education is good. As the qualifications they recieve will be sufficient for them to obtain employment here when the time comes.

Maggymay just consider what/where your kids will be post 16 - if UK then they need a school that has the option of International GCSEs or International A-Levels. If they are likely to go on to Uni or work here or Turkey then they need the Turkish Certificate of Education. There are curriculum differences too - prity sure British history, religion and sex ed are not taught in state schools - but I could be wrong. If your not sure of their future plans then maybe they will need a fee paying secondary school that has the option of both. But the costs can be high - especially hidden costs such as book fees/deposits, buses, uniform and exam fees. My advice - talk to as many parents here as you can and weigh it up depending on your own circumstances. Good Luck!
