The “International Symposium on Isolations” began at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Lefkoşa under the auspices of President Derviş Eroğlu. In his inaugural speech, President Eroğlu complained of the ongoing isolations imposed on the Cyprus Turks and called on the United Nations and the European Union to bring an end to this shame of humanity.



“We don’t want to be told about our rightfulness anymore. We know that we are right. We want actions rather than words” President Derviş Eroğlu said in his opening speech at the 3-day “International Symposium on Isolations”.

Reminding of the fact that there has not been any UN resolution which envisaged embargoes on the Cyprus Turks, Eroğlu pointed out that political loneliness and financial difficulties that emerged with the unjust embargoes, have been the biggest negative factors in the Cyprus Turkish People’s daily lives.



Yet, the President noted that the TRNC state has developed itself in the fields of export and tourism despite of the economic embargoes.



“We are working hard towards a solution to the Cyprus problem, but we need to prove that the Cyprus Turks can stand on their own feet in case the solution process ends in failure. Peace will only remain as a dream if we do not improve ourselves in political and economic terms” Eroğlu went on saying.

Referring to the oil exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, President Eroğlu criticized the Greek Cypriot Side for using its unilateral exploration activities as a tool against the Cyprus Turks and said this situation has raised concerns at a time the comprehensive Cyprus talks are continuing.



He said any natural resources to be discovered shall no way be used as a tool for the continuation of isolations on the Cyprus Turks.



Eroğlu underlined the fact that the removal of isolations will encourage the Greek Cypriot Side towards a settlement and said the Greek Cypriot Side will not come to the point of an agreement as long as the Cyprus talks continue open-ended.
