"We take the "Be Polite" rule very seriously. We do not tolerate any rudeness. Challenge others' points of view and opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully without insult and personal attack. Any member who is intentionally unpleasant or disruptive may be banned without warning."

Could I please respectfully ask the forum adinistrators to start enforcing this rule. I regularly read and occasionally contribute to the threads on Cyprus44 and in general find it informative and entertaining. I've learned a lot about life in the TRNC through the forum and it's helped me to enjoy my visits to the TRNC.

However, there are a small but regular number of posters who seem intent on breaking Rule 3 on a regular basis. This is unnecessary and unpleasant for the rest of us. Please deal with this for the benefit of all of us.

Thanks.

Thanks for the support, but please don't use this thread to single out any one poster. I'd like the moderators to see that there's a genuine concern for the abuse of the rules amongst the majority of the members.

Thanks.

Thank you Simbas.

Could I ask all the other members of Cyprus44, if you agree with me, to post a quick reply here saying so. In that way Simbas and the other moderators will be better placed to judge how seriously many of us take this.

Thanks again.

If there are too many posts for the mods to keep on top of then we need a "report post" button.

I agree with the original post. One thing we can all do is to ignore those who attack the poster rather than the post. Hardly ever do I rise to insults, I simply ignore them.

Totally agree, AndyR. The other night things got so bad that poor Simbas must have spent ages deleting posts and keeping her eyes open in case other 'nasties' appeared.

The majority of people on here are really nice and helpful. It's just a shame that there is a small minority constantly bickering and belittling each other on here. They should find somewhere else to do it....like a playground.

Having said that the moderators do a great job and shouldn't have to watch the board 24/7. It is up to the users to respect the rules in the first place and act like mature adults. They should be given one chance and then banned for disobeying the rules.

Msg 17, joandjelly

That's a very good idea, a simple 'report post' button that we can use to alert the moderators to anything that we think infringes the rules. It would certainly make the job of monitoring the forum easier for them.

A 'report post' link could be very easily added to each post, beside the 'reply' link perhaps. This need do nothing other than generate an automated email to the moderators with the thread and post id's, whilst showing the person who clicked it a simple page saying 'the moderators have been notified'. Technically, it's very simple to implement.

Posters emailing the moderators directly have to load up their mail client or open another browser tab to access their email. They then need to know what email address to send it to. Never having done it I have no idea off the top of my head what the email address is.

It seems to me that it's simpler and more effective all round to have a 'report post' link.

Yes we need a report button, which alerts the mods straight away, perhaps rings like a phone in the mods houses. We need to deal with this some how.

I support a Report post button. Having being a Mod in a past life I do realise how difficult it its. However, there does need to be at least 6 or even 8 Mods on a forum as busy as Cyp.44 in order to stop the idiots from ruining it. They know who they are but unfortunately the Mods do not "jump on" them quick enough because there is infufficient Mods on line at any one time.

There is already a facility at the top of the fist page to email the forum admin without having to open your email account.

I used this for the first time last week and had a reply and satisfactory response within 25 minutes.

It worked for me.

Oh - and I too, support the original post - although there is clearly one or two (perhaps so as not to mock the afflicted? don't know) who never endingly post either risible tripe and/or post puerile or offensive remarks specifically aimed at other contributors...yet don't get castigated...

I agree with the OP and also support a "Report" button. Discussion and disagreement are what it is about but it is such a pity there are a few who spoil things by spite or personal vendettas and it is difficult to know how to cope with them.

Things have improved recently but there are still the minority who spoil it for others.

message 9 ? Uncalled for.

Yesterday history ! Have you ever been bullied on this Forum the way I was the other week ! uncalled for !

Every day is a new beginning.Forgiveness for some is very difficult but for me most of the time it comes easy...............Remember I know why I have been bullied of late. And I am also happy in the hope that things on 44 remain a good board to post on.So come folks behave and lets try to be less patronizing.

Can we all please NOT use this thread to re-open previous disagreements.

The whole point of this thread is that there are far too many examples of people breaking rule 3 with impunity. Use this thread to signal your agreement (or not) with my comments in msg 1 so that the moderators can see how many people are fed up with all this childish bickering and unnecessary insults, no matter who makes them or why!

Report button OK by me but some of those who attempt to bully do not like it back in kind and, like most bullies, they would not hesitate to us the report (to them snitch) button. The moderators could find that their difficult jobs become an impossible workload akin to nuisance 999 calls.

deputydawg, msg 45

I'm sure some people would abuse a 'report post' button, but, it would save the moderators having to read every post on every thread every day. I think mischevious abuse of a 'report post' link would soon die away.

Also, a quick look at the offending post and the thread it was part of would soon show if a report was genuine or not. I have to say, if people report a post for personal reasons rather than because they consider it a breach of the rules then it's probably no bad thing that the moderators scrutinise the thread anyway.

The bitching, arguing, name-calling and general nastiness that leads to closed threads appear to be the ones most members opt to open first.

Well I do anyway!

I think there should be a special heading like "events" where all the closed threads should go. It would save me considerable time searching for them.

Just as an addition to this thread, in my experience it is easy to review past postings from all members and there should be regular reviews to ascertain those members that are bringing nothing positive to the board and after a review those members that fail to contribute positively to the board should be warned and if no compliance after the warning then they should be banned. And lets face it I think most of us know who the members concerned are.

Mr and Mrs Spider

So far we have not had to deal with anyone that has fallen foul of the simple rules we have in place.

The rules of our board are simple but explicit so there really is no room for trouble makers.

Do you not think there is a vast difference between posters that appear rude and confrontational and those that just do not bring anything positive to the board?

How are you defining positive? Will it be only the happy clappy threads allowed? Will Cyp44 turn into nothing more than a list of fab restaurants, price lists and a daily weather forecast? Will posters daring to comment on some of the more negative issues of living or buying in the TRNC be instantly banned?

What about all those incredibly boring posts and there are so many of them, that ask where cat litter or Warburtons bread can be bought?

On any board freedom of speech for me is essential both in subject matter and allowing all users to have their say, even if it does not fit in with my own likes and beliefs. Bad behaviour can never be acceptable but politeness has nothing to do with positivity.

Remember what happened to other boards that only wanted rose tinted spectacle wearers?

I hope this is not off topic but I am trying to understand something. We all know that the moderators on here are not of the argumentative sort and I have never seen an insulting post from a moderator here on 44. Are you moderators the same or are they all very pleasant and helpful. As and Ex moderator on this forum do you think its fair that many members and moderators from other forums come onto 44 with antagonizing posting ?

Bradus

As per usual you are over complicating things, reread my posting again. The emphasis is on reviewing past postings to find out which members are continually trying to stir up trouble on 44. The term 'not bringing anything positive to the board' is a generic term that covers any postings that the the Forum Admin think is detracting from the boards purpose.

There is no such thing as freedom of speech on any board and in my eyes there should never be total freedom of speach. If you join a board then you agree to its rules if you do not agree then you go some where else that will allow you to say what you want but I tell you now you will find it a long and hard search to find such a board.

I can't understand all the fuss.

Troublesome posters usually get found out quickly and moved on, you will always get differences of opinion that decend into an argument or debate thats life.

If people are hoping for a happy smiley forum then I think they may be disappointed.

"without insult and personal attack"

AndyR, in principle I agree with you, and AJ is right in pointing out that there is no such thing as real freedom of speech, although a board on the dark side (I've forgotten its name) appears to tolerate obscenities.

But I also think that Bradus is correct, and certainly is not overcomplicating things. If you go the way a number of posters who have agreed with your original thread, AndyR, I believe you are in danger of creating a too-sterile environment which would lose favour with many posters who enjoy, and enjoy reading, robust debate. It seems to me that Simbas takes her job too seriously at times, closing many threads because they "were serving no purpose" or "were upsetting people" or "had gone off topic".

So what?, I say. As long as what is written is not libellous or obscene, insulting or personally attacking, let it go. People are adult enough, surely, to take care of themselves?

As I posted earlier I am very much in favour of anything which will help deter those who attempt to bully. If the moderators are to take on the uneviable task of trying to eradicate this, will methods used not have to run in tandem with preventing the multiple identity problem ? I know not how that can be achieved but it does seem that increasingly many who purport to be new members are bogus.

It's too difficult to be a poster and a mod.

Referees do not play the game and referee it at the same time. They are also professionals with many years of training, with every decision seen by millions in slow motion. Imagine one of them let it be known he was a Man U supporter after he was chosen to referee their next game. Then before the game with Man City, he expressed an opinion that Balotelli was a spoilt brat and Rooney was underpaid. Even if he refereed the game totally impartially, many would not believe he could be unbiased.

Perhaps there needs to be more mods who will use a new ID (and not post with it).

Why do mods have to be known? They should be unknown. It's better for everyone, UNLESS THEY STOP POSTING.

OMHO.

People here become friends, just like in real life. Even if you disagree with your friend, you are unlikely to go into battle with them on here. It is also highly unlikely that a mod will side with an opponent of their friend.

Texas, the only poster on here who sees it for what it is, a corrupt system, of course the mods favour their friends, just look at what a certain nasty poster gets away with all the time.

Can I thank everyone for all their comments over the last day.

I hope everyone agrees that it shows that there are enough regular contributors to Cyprus44 who agree with my comments in msg 1 for the moderators to take this issue on board.

Could I ask the moderators to close this thread now. Could I also ask that, perhaps in a week or so's time, they post an update on what discussions they've had on tackling this issue?

Thanks again everyone.
