I have had the fortune to meet him a few times. He was always happy and polite. Only last week he was watching his son play and chatting away to other parents. It just goes to show you never know what is realy going on in peoples minds.

Feel so sorry for his family and friends who are left to pick up the pieces.

A good honest player and he had a bright future in coaching his family must be devastated.

Its funny I was watching football focus yesterday and Gary Speed was commenting on Mark Hughes. He said something like "Mark Hughes never answers his phone anyway.".

I remember thinking this is a strange comment for a footballer to be making, normally they take the piss out of each other, but this was said in a serious tone.

That's very interesting that you picked up on that too Paul. I had no idea whatsoever what that comment meant. It just seemed out of place.

Gary Speed was born in an era where by playing premier league his records will always be remembered. He never played for a championship side (except Leeds) but always made a difference to the quality of the side he played for. One of the best headers of the ball I've seen in the premiership, and what a disaster that he ended his life.

The thing that i find strange is he must of had it planned, why feel the need to go on football focus before you kill yourself. Was he depressed if he was someone would of known?

I have always been told its selfish and the cowards way out, but then no one knows the way they feel. Why did he do it, i know depressed people who are on shit loads of meds and when they are bad they cant even get of the sofa for days. Was there any signs of anything it just don't add up the guy seemed on top of the world he had everything going for him. Maybe he caught aids from the local brass, and could not front it, it could be anything.

That's not depressed, if he was depressed he would not function that well, or he would not be doing so well. I cant work it out pressure is when your losing not winning, if he was depressed he would have got help surely?

Football is a tough profession. I can talk from some experience. You are not allowed to show your feelings. You have to constantly show that you are tough and macho. (even if most of them roll around like fairies these days - that's about conning the ref)

This is even more so for a manager. Its quite remarkable that more of them don't implode and its amazing that Gary Speed played so long at the top without showing any signs of cracking.

"Was he about to be outed ?"

Cant see that eager. Wales were playing some great football, picking up some fab results and it looks like the players just loved playing for him.

I wondered if the press had got hold of something about his personal life, that he knew was going to be released.

Did he leave a suicide note?

It is so very sad. I have lost a close relative and two friends to suicide and forever you ask the question WHY??? and if there should have been some way that it could have been prevented. His family will feel the same and my deepest sympathy goes to them. Such a waste of a young life.

Msg 36..., No offence meant to anyone but what i meant by "outed" was not to do with his job.

Only a thought after hearing it said elsewhere but not my business or anyone else's. Very sad.

Thank you 37 hope this stops all rumours etc. and the truth will come out soon. I cannot even begin to feel how his two young boys must be feeling and being teenagers they will be reading all sorts of stuff. Looking at the football world they seem to have some great support around them thank goodness.

What a hoo ha about an ex football player committing suicide when on the same day and in the same part of the world 6 seamen are missing believed dead from the ship "Swanland" which broke her back in a storm off Holyhead. A brief mention on the news yesterday morning and that was it. Today every news bulletin is full of "tributes" to Gary Speed. I think priorities are all wrong.

The man for whatever reason took the cowards way out and one can only have sympathy for his family but those seamen also had families.

matula, message 42.

Every death is a tragedy to friends and family and I can see where you are coming from. The difference is that Speed was a well known figure and the manner of his demise was such a shock. I don't think that the death of the sailors was any less of a loss. nor was the old lady who died trying to hold onto her handbag with her husbands ashes in... mugged by a 14 & 17 YO,

newlad Paul. message 25. A brave man would not take his own life and neither would a coward. God only knows how anyone would be able to put a noose around their own neck and jump.... It has to be complete desolation to do it.

In Maidenhead last week, a young man of 34 threw himself off the top of the car park, and of course died as he hit the pavement, just a few minutes before I arrived there to go shopping - no note, no known reason why (the paper tells us this week). A cousin of my daughter did the same last year, he was 33 - again, no known reason, no note, he was good looking, very solvent, had a huge family he could have turned to, my daughter had lunch with him a few days before; no sign of any distress - no-one will ever know why. A friend of my daughter, ten years ago, was found by her mother, having hung herself - it is so so so tragic - so very very sad...

Some people with the greatest life opportunities, and enormous support network, and no apparent worries - do this - awful for those left behind, who will never know why.

Neither brave or coward. But most do have worries although not apparent to others, they are able to hide things well, unable to share. They may even come across to everyone around them and the services available that they are doing well. They are tormented by there own distorted thoughts and will not share these thoughts with no one.For fear of distressing their own family members. They get to a point in their lives that they can not face living.

They kill themselves. And then I am sure maybe hope the family will understand they just could not face another day.Life is not easy for this type of person, its a hidden struggle and for must it has been a hidden struggle for a long time.

One of our clients blasted his brains out,.Would that be called brave..I am sure he was in a great deal of fear preparing for this moment, just seconds away from death.

My sister took her own life, but I say she killed herself, because this is what she did.

The mind is a complex thing..
