The top 10 contenders for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award have been named.

The list features Olympic heroes swimmer Rebecca Adlington, and cycling champions Nicole Cooke, Chris Hoy, Rebecca Romero and Bradley Wiggins.

Fellow Beijing winners sailor Ben Ainslie and 400m gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu also make the list.

Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, boxer Joe Calzaghe and British tennis number one Andy Murray make up the 10.

how about John Sergeant, Dancing must be a sport, ice dancing is. Twas the only time I have watched one of these naff programmes and admire Johns movement arount the floor purely stunning. John should have won it. THose judges think they know about dancing what a farce. Lets face it if the programme is for entertainment who cares who wins a bit like many TV programmes really

I have no interest in sailing but respect all sportsmen and women for what they achieve.

I would doubt many will appreciate or even know of the achievements of Ben Ainslie.

He won a sailing silver medal in 1996 Olympics at Atalanta. He followed up with Gold in 2000 (Sydney), Gold in 2004 (Athens) and Gold in Bejing (2008). In addition has numerous class victories throughout his career and he is still only 31!

Lewis Hamilton may be the latest high profile "pin up" in motor racing but for consistency over last 12 years do not look passed this young man - BEN AINSLIE - a true sportsman and achiever.

I think we should have a '44' Sports Personality 2008.

My nominations are:

1: Anthony Hamilton, Lewis's dad, who has spent his life supporting Lewis. Taking on 3 jobs and rascist comments with dignity.

2: 13yr old, 3'9" tall Eleanor Simmonds for her 2 Beijing Paralympic swimming Golds. Her tearful, joyous interview was unmissable.

3: BBC pundit Steve "I'm not Michael Phelps!!" Parry, mobbed by Chinese with cameras, who thought he was.

4: ECB Selectors, for their PC policy of employing disadvantaged players!

5: RFU Selectors, as above!

6: Arsene Wenger, though he may be ruled out due to his interest (allegedly!) in spending time with teenage boys. ;-(

7: Joe Calzaghe, for buying property in N Cyprus! What a Hero!

I believe he is also a boxer.

Any other nominations?

In another year any of them would be a winner, but like buses they have all come along at once.

Joe Calzaghe won it last year, quite a few really deserve it but seeing you can only pick one person, then for me i go for Rebbeca Adlington

These so called sports heroes are not a patch on the true stars of the 70s and 80s, here are a few examples

Wrestling, you have Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy

Snooker, Bill Werbeneck

Darts, Leighton Rees

and finally the real champion has to be probably the best footballer this country has ever produced, grossly underated by the critics, bring on down Carlton Palmer.

For the real deal... well Lewis... the youngest ever world champion in F1 and he's got a stonking fiance to boot... double whammy!

joe c definately! well, over 10 years yes, but sports personality of the YEAR? - no. only one winner - JEFF STELLING! ha ha , absolute legend. In my view, a close second would be the young diver. tremendouus maturity and talent for one so young (not christiano, the one whos 14!). next wd be paula r, and in third place, a blast from the past - olga corbett, daughter of the late, great ronnie!

I think every competitor that trains as hard as they do deserves something but medals are for winners. You have got to be so dedicated to GET to the Olympics, let alone win a medal.

I take my hat off to them all
