Just been to a lot of trouble getting my son to send me a Kindle DX from California, because they won't send them to Saudi Arabia, and now find that they won't even send BOOKS on Kindles, nor allow any Kindle service, anywhere in the Middle East. I believe they operate well in TRNC, so can anyone offer advice on how I can get some books on its operation, and load up on e-books while I'm there in January?

If you set up an account with Amazon you will be able to order books through your Kindle or through Amazon itself. you will need an internet connection to do this be it 3g or just wireless. Once you are set up it is simple, just scroll the books on offer and hit "buy". They download almost immediately and then appear on your home screen. I suggest you try a few of the freebies first until you get the hang of it. There are usually reiviews posted Good luck, flossie

Guys, thanks for your responses, but you didn't read my post properly. I'm in Saudi Arabia, which is one of the countries NOT serviced by Kindle.

Not sure if it will work, but have you tried registering at an address in the UK ( perhaps a relative's )

Or, you could go onto Ebay...put in E books...and check out what is available. I got a disc with 5000 books on for £2 + pp...then load the disc onto your computer then put onto the kindle. (Assuming you can access E bay and get deliveries) this seems like the most viable option for you, until you get back home. Hope this helps out for now. DD

Think this is right. When you are in NC register it to a wireless connection by giving the code no from the wireless box, you will have to set up an account with Amazon with an e-mail address and a credit or debit card you then go on the kindle book section on Amazon and download them from there, once registered to a wireless connection you just have the Kindle turned on and they download quickly.

Carian, thanks but I don't have any friends or relatives in the UK. Thanks DD, that seems like a way to go. I'll try it. And Woodspeckie, I'll try that in January, when we are back. The only card I have is a Visa card issued by the Riyad Bank, so I guess I'll need to get one in TRNC, like an HSBC or one from the new bank in Esentepe. Thanks all for your help.

rottolover Let's test this out, I'll send you some books to your email 'rottolover@gmail.com' They are in mobi format... BTW if you download 'calibre' (free) you can convert nearly all formats to the Kindle's native mobi format

Groucho and mick, thanks. But can you bear with a near-Luddite and explain how you would send the books to me by email? I understand how to transfer from CDs or flash drives, but how do you transfer books, especially shedloads?

OK, thanks Groucho. I'll look forward to trying it all out...I read almost anything I can get here (in Saudi), but especially like Harlan Cobin (now), Sam Llewellyn, Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Victor O'Reilly and the old SF writer, Eric Frank Russell. But I'm happy with almost anything...

Well books don't actually take up much space...which is how come you can get three thousand on a CD! I've sent you three Michael Connelly books. When you open your mail you can download them (they are attachments to the mail). Then attach your kindle and drag and drop the books onto your kindle.

Rottolover, I am also in the Middle East. I found that setting up an account with Amazon.co.uk, as opposed to Amazon.com, did the trick and I have no trouble downloading books now.

Hi Rosie, thanks for the info. I came to that conclusion last night, wondering how they would know exactly where you were, and if I could use the Kindle on holidays in Cyprus, how they would register the change of country. I'm going to try a UK VPN next. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no information on using the device, so I'm stumbling around it pushing buttons at the moment.
