I am putting this message on here as my wife started with a health problem while on holiday in n cyprus and we are no nearer finding out the cause. It may just be a coincidence that it started on holiday but we are wondering if anyone else has had the same problem

During the last week of our holiday in October we spent 2 days in the Karpas and on our return my wifes neck started to swell. Checked for bites but couldnt see anything. My wife decided to wait until she got back to England as she didnt think it was serious.

Since our return my wife has had 2 lots of different anti biotics,a scan and a biopsy. This week she will have an x-ray.Only thing found was a small infection on her glands. But her neck is even more swollen and hard in places. She feels sick at times and very tired. We have seen a specialist who thought it might be mumps but the blood tests ruled that out. so we can only hope the x ray will find the cause.

Ayone else had similar symptoms or got an idea what it s?

Ask the Doctor to check out sand fly fever. I got it in my legs a few years ago. One leg swelled up below the knee including my foot. I felt exhausted, and symptoms like a heavy cold/fever. Took 3 months to heal and go away. Treatment was some white liquid which I painted onto the leg every day, paracetamol and rest!

message 2 and 3. thank you for your kind message.

message 4. that is a possibilty and consultant has been asked to consider this. biopsy should show this up. there is no evidence of any bites though could be somewhere cannot be seen such as inside of ear(the main swelling is under the ears) and she does not have any flu symptoms. thanks for reply.

Sandfly fever symptoms seem to differ from person to person. I had no visible bites but had a dreadful headache for a week and was completely exhausted. Husband also had no visible bites and had severe neck and back pain and again severe fatigue. You should insist that your wife is checked for this.

Agree that you should ask for sandfly fever to be considered. My husband had it a few years back & ended up at the walk in centre at the hospital. The doctor there refused to consider it but his GP was very good and did some research and concluded that this was what he did in fact have. The tiredness seems to be a factor in most cases I have heard of.

Unfortunately most of the docotrs in Uk do not recognise Sand Fly fever, a couple of years ago our friend nearly died with complications from Sand fly, and it was only when another friend was insistent that a test was done and then the bellls rang and Sand Fly was diagnosed. "Its a tropical desease" was what the excuse was made!!!!! He did make a full recovery lathough it took many many months, he was a gentleman of 76 years old at that time.

Your e-mail address is not displayed, if you can e-mail me on trnchealthcare@gmail.com and I get the name of a Dr / hospital in London that has been dealing with patients from here that have / had Leishmaniasis (sand fly fever)

My first guess would be sand fly fever, but the symptoms in my case were similar to glandular fever (which included swollen neck and exhaustion ,) though no particular connection with Cyprus. Have they checked for that?

we should have the results of the biopsy tomorrow.

we will raise the subjects of sandfly fever and glandular fever if there are no answers to the biopsy.

Re my first reply, message 4, perhaps I should have stated, I did not notice or feel any bites at the time. The little devils got me whilst I was gardening, but I have no idea when!!! Get well soon!

Sand fly bites are not the same as mozzie bites they just leave little red dots on the skin.

When I had sandfly fever I was put on a drip for about 2 hours for 2 consecutive days I was also advised to eat only very plain food (chicken, rice, potatoes) no dairy, oil, salt or red meat. I had been ill for about 7 days and after the drip it took about another 4 days to recover. Are you able to contact a tropicle diseases specialist for advice? Sandfly Fever is actually Leishmaniasis so this is perhaps how you should refer to it. The Hospital for Tropical Diseases has a general office number although I don't know if they can give you medical advice they may be able to point your doctor in the right direction. The general office number is at the bottom of the page http://www.thehtd.org/Research.aspx

I do hope your poor wife recovers soon.

Hi

I have recently been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called Vasculitis (Wegners Disease). Some of the symptons are swellings, aching joints excessive tiredness and an awful lot more. My doctor here was fantastic and had me tested for several things. I had blood tests for ESR, ANCA, and PANCA and a full Blood countit was the PANCA test that revealed the infection. I have been told that I am extremely lucky as if had got to my organs could be fatal within 5years. When you read the web page about the disease do not panic and do not dismiss the symptons as my symptons were nowhere near what they describe. There is no cure and I will be on medication for life but now I know what to look for and just have to be careful.

I hope your wife gets better.

Best wishes

Sandra

I had exactly the same symptons many years ago after a holiday in Tenerife, it was very scary as my throat nearly closed up my neck was so swollen. I too thought it was an insect bite at first.

The doctor did not suspect mumps as I had no swelling anywhere else but after a few weeks they confirmed it had been mumps - I was better by then. At the time the result of a mumps test took maybe 3 weeks. Presumably now they can do it quicker or maybe you could insist on another test?

I really hope your wife gets better soon.
