I believe in giving credit where it is due and Cyprus Life hospital is due some right now! My hubby DJ Mike, who some of you may possibly have heard of, is in there at the moment after undergoing surgery. He had his op yesterday and his surgeon Dr Tayfun saw him once before the op, twice after the op, the last check up being 9-30 last night and then, again at 8 o clock this morning. Now that is a caring doctor by anyone's standards. Mike is due to come home later so he will see the doctor again this afternoon and hopefully, he will be discharged to continue with out patient care. Now I know that some of you cynics out there will be saying "ah yes, but you are paying for it!" and I agree that we are, but the care that Mike has been getting is worth every penny! To anyone out there who might be a bit worried about medical care over here, yes, you do have to pay, but it is first class! Well done Cyprus Life hospital! Pam

Hello Pam, It's good to hear that your hubby is making good progress. Well done for posting the information for others who may be concerned about their health and where to turn for advice. Is The Cyprus Life Hospital the same one as Medikent?

Hi pammick, Good to hear Mike's on the mend, and the treatment given was to your satisfaction. Having recently spent 9 days in Lefkosa's Dr Burhan Nalbantoglu State Hospital. I too was happy with the treatment given me. I was admitted by ambulance, so had no choice of medical care. The facility's may not have been as modern as a private hospital, but the care & attention was as good as you might get in any "state" hospital in the UK. Hope Mike makes a full recovery, Navek

I also agree with Pam. Dr Tayfun operated on me just over a year ago when I broke my leg. My leg is as good as new now and probably a lot stronger with all the metal that went in.

Msg. 1 I'm old enough to remember when that was the sort of care you got in an NHS hospital before it was brought to it's knees. I can also remember (having been one) when nurses actually nursed and did "the dirty work" e.g. when nurses were taught to bed bath, clean bums and look after bed sores. We were also expected to care for patients, not treat them as numbers on a computer read out. I know there are exceptions but they're getting fewer and fewer it appears to me. Sorry rant over and apologies for high jacking the thread!!

R.C.T.Man, where can you get medical insurance? We were thinking about this so any suggestions would be appreciated. Tango 1 - have to agree about the nursing standard nowadays, the rot seemed to set in with Project 2000 and got worse with degree nurses ( although as always there were exceptions ) but when you got 3rd year student nurses that had never given an injection it makes you think! Pam - hope Mike makes a speedy recovery and is back to playing music soon.

I also wish Mike a speedy recovery. We have private medical insurance in the UK and have nothing but praise for it. However my gripe is sometimes getting past the secretarial staff they can be pains in the neck, if you pardon the pun !!

Message 13. You do realise that us "pains in the neck" medical secretaries do as the wonderful consultants tell us, do you? What we find to be pains are the people who have private medical insurance and think the world (and timetables, operation lists, etc.) revolve around them.

Message 15 - The people who use private medical insurance are saving the NHS a fortune and the consultants would have less work and therefore less money if no-one used them. I have a nephew who is a consultant anaesthetist and in charge of an intensive care unit. You might think that this would be a humbling experience, no, he is the most bigoted, arrogant person I know, grown into someone who has no time for his elderly parents who supported him financially through all the years of studying and snaps at them if they dare to ask him any questions about their health which they are concerned about. What a prig he is!

suehowlittle - I could not agree with you more. Some Consultants (notall, but most, to be honest) are not exactly a barrel of laughs to work for, either An old 'joke' doing the rounds many years ago went along the lines of: Question: "How does Mr (Consultant) spell his name?" Answer: "Well, he spells it G.O.D."

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes - Mike is now home, in a lot of pain, but doing ok. He will soon be back to his old self, the radio shows are pre-recorded so you won't be missing any of them. Mike thanks once again for your concern. Pam

Mike is doing ok but I must just add this, which I think is rather funny! His surgery was to amputate his little finger, which has been giving him a lot of problems for a long time. After his operation, a small container was left on the table in his room, containing?? Yes ---- you've guessed it ------ his finger!!!! Now why on earth they should think we wanted to take it home with us is beyond me!! Perhaps they thought we wanted to have it stuffed and mounted?? Anyway, I handed it back to the doctor for disposal and he seemed surprised that we didn't want it. Is this some strange Turkish custom ???? I am baffled! In spite of that, Dr Tayfun is great and he has a lovely sense of humour! Pam
