Dont know if i have got this right. But i have heard that as a car gets older the amount of annual road tax gets reduced. Does anyone know if this is correct and if it is, then by how much the tax ir reduced?

Don't do it anymore - but - if you were lucky enough and I was, to get a discount when it was available then it carrys on and the tax will not go back up to what it was. For instance my 2.5TD Pajero road tax is 660TL for a 1997 registered vehicle - other people are paying double that for the same year and make! Lucky.

Went on Wed to do mine, and couldnt believe it when it was lower than last year!! there hasnt been a discount for no accidents etc for 4 years now. BUT you are right, the older the car the less tax. Had mine for 5 years now and it went down with a nice bump!! that is one of the reasons for the bangers there are around I imagine.

Ours went down last year as it was classed as being over 5 years old.

Thanks guys, that is what i was told, if the car is over 5 years the tax comes down, but can find no other information about it. That is the reason for the post. I'm not sure how this fits in with waddo's post. My car will be over 5 years old when i do the tax again next year and was wondering if it was going to be any cheaper. I will live in hope until March!!!!!!!

Geoff, we were like you last year as our car had been imported into the country just 5 years before ( its actually a 1998 model ) but were pleasantly surprised when it had gone down from the previous year, for when they they were still doing the discount for no speeding fines. Think its something like 5% but better than nothing!

Geoff, there is still a discounted drop in road tax for vehicles once they go over the 5 year TRNC registration age, I thought you were referring to the previous system whereby cars over 10 years of TRNC registration age received a 50% discount! At the same time as the government brought that in, they also brought in the extra 10% discount for road tax if the owner/driver had not had any traffic fines in the previous year - it is those two items that very quickly were stopped again and not the 5 year old discount.

Always remember it makes no difference how old (manufacturing date) your vehicle is - it is only as old as the duration of time that it has been registered with a TRNC license plate! So a vehicle manufactured in 1990 and brought here then registered with a TRNC plate in 2010 is actually only 1 year old for road tax purposes!!!

Waddo, you do have to go around in a car bearing the name 'Pajero' though....

pajero- en sentido sexual significa "wanker/tosser" it can also mean liar.

Geoff, if your car is young enough to have a built in satnav, you can try and program it all you want. but you will not find Manchester anywhere in europe,

Would bet that put a smile on your face,

The reason they give discounts for older vehicles is:

A. They want to encourage drivers to buy them as they use more fuel and therefore receive more tax revenue.

B. The police can earn more in fines.

C. They don't have a vehicle "crusher" on the island, so it's better to keep them on the road.

D. It keeps the local economy going (repairs,etc.).

E. ?????

My understanding is that you get a discount after five years not sure of the percentage, then a 40% discount after 10 years and finally a 60% discount after 15 years. All these dates run from the dtate of first registration in TRNC.
