Do you have key holding ? if so then maybe they can sort it for you . if not then just wait till you go over next time , produce your electricity bill as the consunption would be that low that could prove that no one was staying in the apartment . There is no need to concern yourself if this is a mistake , the department should understand it was a mistake on there part .

A copy of your ins and outs would also help your case.

I think you may find that any empty property is going to be assumed available for rental and you will be charged for a notional rent.

Afraid I cannot offer any advice except this situation is coming about cos so many people have been flouting the law on rental income.

Do not know particular person but a friend does, and their house is rented solid across the summer every year and they even boast about "why should I pay tax"!!!

Should we all become grasses and shop all these known law breakers?

Problem with that. Somebody kindly reported us to authorites for something we had not done and it took is several months to resolve the situation at a large cost.

Could you expand on this please ?

My understanding is that if a property is used without profit you just pay property tax and that is it . I would be quite alarmed if i thought i had to pay another tax when simply using my apartment for my own personal l use .

David,

If you made this up or you are making an assumption without any actual evidence, it is not helpful as this is how a lot of the daft rumours get started... that and alcohol...

So do tell, have you been told this officially, or read it, or are you the source?

If you did not let, you have no rental income. No income/No tax.

You have probable received an estimated assessment (resen vergi).

You must make an appel asasp. You can make this by post, by sending to Girne Vergi Dairesi, Girne, Mersin-On Turkey. (Assume your property is in Girne, if not send to the district where you house is).

You can write to the tax office in English.

There was something in press last year when all of this started to come to the fore. Sorry can not be more explicit but it was there with all the explanations of how to pay etc.

Only noted as does not affect ourselves.

It will be interesting to see developments over next few weeks along with illegal cars etc.

thanks for your replys did not have much sleep last night but nice to see we have some feed back .bigben thanks for your info it helps alot ,we have a key holder who found this letter on his monthly check ,as its in turkish and we are in england we cant get to know if its a mistake ,or put under the wrong door we are trying to get our turkish neibour to pick the letter up and translate it to us . it cant be possible to have people on the same site renting nine months a year and paying 360 ytl and we get a bill for1885ytl for not renting surely they can check our electric bill and see when we come over they check our passport when you arrive so they know we are there, we have always loved our place and the nice people but this sort of thing makes you wish you never invested here . hopefully we can resolve this with out coming over . again many thanks for your help and if anyone can get an email address for the tax office it it would be great cheers bob

Your key holder should see if the assessment is named to you. If it is, ask for the ref. number and write to the tax office, given the ref. no give a date when you will be visiting, the office will wait for you.
