Ebbern5. There are number of places where you can pick up a wi-fi connection. There is no charge.

We picked up a free wifi connection at the Golf Club Esentepe, The Ship at Lapta, The Altinkaya Hotel and the Courtyard Inn with no trouble.

I would recommend getting a Turkcell mobile modem if you are going to be here long. If you purchase the modem you can pay monthly by a top up card - so no need to sign up for a year's contract. 60 Ytl per month. I live at Alsancak and the signal is good here - check with Turkcell for your area.

Peeky, can you confirm that we would only have to top up as and when we are out there and not on a regular basis as this would be an excellent way of being able to use laptop when in NC without being tied in etc. How much is the initial modem thingy and as I like to use my laptop where ever I am comfortable is it a huge addition that would hamper movement.

We would also have to check that Sweetwater Bay at Esenteppe can get the signals etc.

The modem costs 149ytl. There are 2 packages limited to 4Gb = 60ytl & Unlimited = 70 ytl. These prices are for 30 days and you can top up whenever you want, so ideal if visting only a couple of times a year.

Are you high up in Alsancak? Have you a clear view of Mercure hotel?

If so try and pick up extend hotspot - if you can its 29ytl a month - this gets you the password to connect to them. We use it - goes a bit funny now and again - esp after a power cut - but its the cheapest we have found!

You can buy the password from shops in Girne - one next door to Mr Pound sells then.

We live up by sunnylane school - bit too far for our antique laptop - so we had to buy a signal booster which picks it up for us.

Hope this helps

Thank you for that link as it gives me more info and it looks exactly what we need for visits so we can keep in touch with the teenagers left at home

I am assuming we can do anything we would normally do on the internet MSN Skype general surfing and email etc does it handle watching I player and More 4 etc?

Andy

Are there different packages as my neighbour has just got the little box @ 149ytl but they said they paid only 30ytl for the monthly card. Also if you pay 12 months up front you get the box for free. I was thinking of changing from Extend to Turkcell, as the reception is so slow. After the initial lay out it has got to be cheaper than the 89ytl I am paying now.

Yes you are right, the modem is free if you purchase for 12mths.

Not sure what the 30ytl a month is, as not heard of that one. You sure they did not mean £30gbp as this would equal approx 70Ytl?????

Yes, you can MSN, Skype, download torrents.

3G is good just remember that if you are on 'unlimited' the max download is 5.5 gb a day

and Turkcell is better than Telsim (no change there then!) but then Telsim is cheaper , your choice.

Using 3G and Skype? I do, sometimes great, including using video, othertimes terrible. Percentage around 80% good, 20% bad. This is at Alsancak.

Anybody else?
