A religious leader of a community in Turkey caused a lot of arguments, as well as endless strings of funny "why does Santa..." questions from posters in social sites! He was reported by major newspapers as saying "If Santa was a decent man he would use the door and not the chimney to go in people's houses" Lets hear from cyprus44 members, why does Santa use the chimney OR if you are in a joke mode - then, what else Santa should do to prove his decency?

One of the mythical figures from which the modern Santa was drawn was a mischievous elf who couldn't use doors. Hence the chimney.

Yes, but why the hell does he have to wear that dreadly red coloured outfit! Could it be because if the "raindeers" fail, he might crash land in snow bound mountains (hence can be easily visible)

I just read that Santa may well be a replica of an old Germanic myth before Christianity; "Among early Germanic tribes, one of the major deities was Odin, the ruler of Asgard. A number of similarities exist between some of Odin's escapades and those of the figure who would become Santa Claus Odin was often depicted as leading a hunting party through the skies, during which he rode his eight-legged horse, Sleipnir. In the 13th-century Poetic Edda, Sleipnir is described as being able to leap great distances, which some scholars have compared to the legends of Santa's reindeer. Odin was typically portrayed as an old man with a long, white beard, much like St. Nicholas himself In winter, children placed their boots near the chimney, filling them with carrots or straw as a gift for Sleipnir. When Odin flew by, he rewarded the little ones by leaving gifts in their boots. In several Germanic countries, this practice survived despite the adoption of Christianity"

dippersgirl; I quote: "The legend of Santa Claus can be traced to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed Nicholas was born around 280 A.D. in Patara, in today's Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick. Over the course of many years, Nicholas's popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. This was traditionally considered a lucky day to make large purchases or to get married. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular saint in Europe. Even after the Protestant Reformation, when the veneration of saints began to be discouraged, St. Nicholas maintained his reputation, especially in Holland The name Santa Claus evolved from his Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas..."

Maybe he cant find parking space for the sledge and reindeer except on the roof, and from there it is quicker to slide down the chimney and avoid the traffic wardens! Of course a lot of Christmas traditions are jumbled with much older pagan celebrations ("Yule" ) of the winter solstice (same with Easter and spring) - the Yule log for instance and holly, ivy and mistletoe (sacred to the Druids). And comparatively recently the Christmas tree was introduced from Germany by Prince Albert What I cant understand is how (and why) ST. Nicholas transferred himself from Turkey to the North Pole - complete with red coat, slieghbells, reindeer, etc and all those elves . Walt Disney has a lot to answer for!

Santa was delivered by Caesarean Section at birth before the days of key hole surgery and after such mental trauma, by instinct, does not "do doors" only topside apertures !
