What happened to the cider man restaurant on the right hand side out of Kyrenia towards Karaoglanoglu? He was there approximately 3 or 4 years ago, he seemed to be doing very well then closed down; can anyone shed light on what happened? He sold freshly made pizzas, cold draught beer in an ice frosted glass, and of course cider.

He ran an excellent business badly!! I think he continued to import cider but obviously the market wasn't there. Pity because we miss the doughnuts ( when the machine was working!) and the cider - but there you go !!!!

bertieboss. Aren't you an occasional visitor to TRNC? ? ? Surely you can get doughnuts in the UK.... Mark worked hard at his business so I don't see that anyone has the right to say that he 'ran an excellent business badly'.

Msg 9 I also think it is unfair to criticise a business that has closed down maybe for a number of reasons. Mark made the effort to provide a service with possibly a substantial amount of investment. Perhaps the market was simply not there, but he made his customers feel welcome.Good luck to him.

Mark worked hard and ran a good business, he like many others was tied up with the administrative nightmare that is the TRNC. In everything he tried he was ground down, but that is why the TRNC is a failure and until there is a business friendly attitude and economic common sense to encourage the creation of wealth they have no future. For example a country entirely dependent on tourism needs an airline, an airport that is not a joke like Ercan and a Ministry of Tourism that works to get people there. The word abject failure springs to mind!

Well said Allan & Cyprusactive. Good luck to Mark, now in the UK so I believe. I know from experience that it is almost impossible to run a business in TRNC as a foreigner.

Ballyboffin - what is your problem?. The man was ok but he had zilch customer skills. That is my opinion and bugger all to do with you !And why does it matter whether I am an occasional visitor or not? You sound a bit of a half wit!!

This is Ciderman - to put the record straight why we closed is as follows; We opened in July 2004 and closed July 2006 this was a two year rental agreement. When we completed the two year agreement we wanted a longer contract of 5 years, the landlord rejected this he wanted two years again, however, the landlord(the local mooktar - sorry bad spelling) wanted to double our rent not the normal 10% increase but 100% increase. My wife and I decided based on this increase we wernt prepared to line his pockets further from our profit and decided we close. We had a fantastic enjoyable time and had a huge customer base, where customers came from kyrenia,Nicosia and famagusta. We employed 10 staff. We were the first pizza in North Cyprus to offer pork related products i.e. ham, bacon, pepporoni, salami and using mozzeralla cheese. You couldnt in those days buy those products on the turkish side so we purchased from the producers on the greek side. The first to import cider ......continued on next p

We were the first company to import cider and to sell freshly made donuts. The cider when it arrived by a 20 container the customs had not heard of cider,so when they looked at the tariff of duties they couldnt find it,so they said a figure which was extremly high and killed the opportunity to supply all the supermarkets although we managed a few like lemar,so we focussed on selling direct from our restaurant. The freshly made donuts was a different marketing ploy.We had customers that either come in for cider or donuts or pizza or all three. We new they would be a winner to the customers. Running a business in TRNC is not easy and apart from the investment we put into the building which was a empty shell before we moved in , the staff wages and the local taxes , generator fuel for the then many power cuts, it takes alot determination and work ethic to succeed in another country.BERTIEBOSS has no idea about running a business in the TRNC.What a plonker! ........continued on next p

People like him have got nothing better to do because they couldnt do it. We had a reputation of serving good food, our prices wernt cheap, but it was the quality product and service we aimed for which we succeded. We offered the food and drink market at that time something different.Any succesful business entails alot of planning and marketing.Thats why today 5 and a half years on, we are still remembered for customer satisfaction. We had live music every monday night and belle dancer, and the arab which was entertaining. When we were operating we were asked to open branches in nicosia and famagusta, but i felt i would lose the control of what we were doing - you cant be in three places at once,so we stayed as one resturant. In the period we operated we were the busiest pizza place in kyrenia by miles.Today I think moni penny is the best pizza place in kyrenia - they buy stock from our then suppliers on the Greek side.I hope this clears up any stories flying about why we closed, now you kno

I agree with Cocklebay. Good as it is of you Mark to explain the situation regarding your business, it is just that..... YOUR BUSINESS! There should never have been any need for it. You worked hard and tried to make an honest living in TRNC, a virtually impossible task, I know. bertieboss is a horrible little man who appears on here to spout venom and insult usually late at night when he has had a few I imagine. I have also been on the recieving end of his barbs before this post, totally unprovoked I may add, he just does like me or my opinions for whatever twisted reason he has. Ignore him, he is without doubt an unhappy, frustrated and unfulfilled person. Perhaps more to be pitied than dispised. Good Luck to you in the UK and A Happy New Year.

Mark Brilliant! Many thanks for putting the record straight, as mentioned I for one thought it was an excellent business, we chatted several times, enjoyed your beer, cider and pizza. It's just a shame the system was against you, and of course the landlord. All the best
