That's a first inqalil! I teach Turkish here, and the major problem my students face learning the language is everyone responding to them in English, even when they try and say things in Turkish (for practice)! I have witnessed it happen in many shops and supermarkets myself... Perhaps there is another reason people ignore you? I have never ever witnessed or heard of anyone being ignored because "they don't speak Turkish". This may well be true in today's Germany or France (where they have a built in reaction to "English" anything), but I think you will not find many living here would strongly disagree with your comments - unless of course, you had tried to communicate with the odd ındividual who does not speak anyEnglish. BTW the official language in TRNC is Turkish, it would also help if you started to learn Turkish, should you plan on living here.

My suggestion to you would be that you get involved with charity events, where you will meet lots of like minded people and hopefully meet new friends. If you like animals, there is BARK, which takes care of the stray animals in the Famagusta side, or the cancer charity, anything really, that will get you socialising with people. You could also join a hobby group, there are loads here in Girne, so I am sure there must be similar groups in Famagusta. Good luck, I hope my suggestions help, I am sure you will make friends eventually but it won't happen over night, building up friendships can take time. Best wishes, Pam

I'm living here ( Magusa ) for about 3 years and I don't speak Turkish... but still people never ignored me for that ! Maybe you get some limitation of choosing your friends anyway at the end it depends on how you try to communicate... for example I always try to use some little Turkish which I have learned while talking to new people.

Everywhere I have to take my husband as a translator...its annoying really. Ive heard that BARK is closed totally. I was thinking about hobby groups of course but I dont know if there are in Famagusta. I was hoping this forum will help about this too. Im lreaning turkish alone at home but still its not enough to comunicate...:/ I went for shopping and non of shop keepers was trying to speak English. The only place where shop keepers are speaking English is old town - there I dont have any problem...

Well I live in Famagusta and I speak three languages, the last one being a truly international language. The three languages are: English, Turkish and Rubbish. ismet

I feel there is certainly less English spoken here in Magusa than in, say, Lefkosa or Girne. Aside from Ismet and others of his age, who were brought up under British "rule", the only others here in Magusa really competent in English are the few (post 74) who travelled each day to Lefkosa Turk Maarif College and of course the London Cypriots settled here.

I live in Famagusta & most of my neighbours are turkish & they couldn't be nicer. They practice their english on me & I practice my few words of turkish on them & we get on very well. I must admit it's nice to meet up with my english friends for some good old english chats but I have no problem living in Famagusta
