if this is the intention of the goverment then it means all talks will fail and we are going apply for independence. I would prefer to see Republic of North Cyprus just remove the Turkish part.

I have said for the past 2 years the talks are going nowhere and when statements like this appear it just confirms to me that no agreement or unification was ever a credible option.

. And a rose by any other name would smell as sweet!!!!!! Leaving out "Northern" would suggest that the whole Island was Turkish, and I doubt they intend to be quite so provacative! Using the word "Turkik" (meaning of Turkish and assoiated racial origin) rather than "Turkish" which could indicate part of the Republic of Turkey , might be an option?

republic of northern cyprus sounds good. with the 'turkish' word it sounds as if cyprus is a 'colony' or puppet of turkey and not an independent country

How many Greek islands or coastline of Greece can you see from Cyprus? Yesterday I was told by a friend who is very close to the Govt. that the previous day there was a vote in Parliament agreeing that Turkish Nationals no longer needed PTP'S. Is the writing on the wall?

Mes. 3. It does not matter how it is called and how it will be. What makes different between Cypriots from Turks? North Cyprus is a large vilayet (province) of Turkey. And there is no chance for Cyprus to stay apart. I prefer the Greek part to be Turkish as well.

Another part which suprised me is that Government of TRNC considering to change the name now. Ridiculous thought. Is it an issue now or a great necessity? There are thousands of practical issues to solve..from collecting garbage to elementary road driving ethics of the local drivers..Please wake up!

Thieves Island. Immoral Isle. The Republic of carpet baggers. The Cyprus triangle. The joke. Banana Republic of Cyprus. Turkeys bitch. Lucky dip. The Turkish republic's free for all state. Gaz-less Cyprus. Never, never land. Planet Cyprus. Stolen Cyprus. Last stand Cyprus. The republic of 13 kids and a loaf of bread. United Cyprus. A few there for them to ponder. Polly, if you had a friend in goverment you wouldn't be in the mess you are now.

I think there needs to be a completely different change of tack. Everyone here seems to want to keep words like republic and Cyprus in, when a name change should in fact be the opportunity to get rid of the baggage of the past and brand the place as something new, maybe a catchy jingle. East Florida? Doo Dah (we all live in a place near the beach, doo dah, doo dah) The Levant (half the world wouldnt know the difference) Developer Island Kochans are us etc etc etc...........

Why not call it France or Germany or United Kingdom - there are many benefits there, no pun intended but if you called it the UK then everyone would qualify for something!!! Call it France and it could continue to be ignored by the rest of the world, but it would be official. Call it Germany and the air fares would drop as it is a lot closer to the UK. Biggest bonus is that if you called it any of those names then it would be recognized by the rest of the world at last! OR You could just leave it as it is and spend the millions of TL it would cost to change the name on something worthwhile and useful to the Nation!

blade, I didnt say IN govt. I said CLOSE to govt. there is an important difference. blade, how do you think the leader of the opposition was able to question the Finance Minister in Parliament about his Directorship of Akfinans in the documents dated 2009. Not everyone who is in Parliament is part of the present Govt. If you got a copy dated now, he would not be there, lucky such evidence was available. I have no problem with a current Minister having formerly been a Bank Director, what I have a problem with is K5 leaking all their plans to that Director because they were unaware (me too) of the connection at that time. Some good came out of my former Advocate sacking me Now, however I am a great fan of the Finance Minister since he is the Architect of the new proposed law to cap Bank interest rates and make the law restrospective - perhaps the revelation of his previouse connection was the wake up call he needed. He has my full support for this Bill.

This issue could have been an idea from the south in preperation for the forthcomming "official" parting of the ways. They simply will never accept "Turkey" in the name..... Just simply call it North & South Cyprus ?

I don't think it will make one iota of difference in terms of recognition. However what this name change will do is let the world know that there is no such place as North Cyprus. It's now Turkish. How do the Turkish Cypriots on this forum feel about losing their Cypriot identity and this part of Cyprus becoming Turkish rather than Cypriot?

How about leaving the place alone if you don't like it - and let those of us who do like it - enjoy it. The constant sniping by those who have made bad commercial decisions and the hangers on who chunter on the side lines are spoiling the whole place. What amazes me is that punters are still lining up to buy property there! You can always tell a Brit but you cant tell him much!!
