Hi, Myself, my boyfriend and 9 year old daughter are looking to relocate in 2012/13 and I am considering GAU for my daughter. We are planning on visiting later this year. With regard to locations I am looking at Alsancak/Lapta/Karsiyaka/Karaglanoglui. Can anyone let me know please where are the most children my daughter's age, or the benefits of these places for us. Also, any advice regarding work for my boyfriend, he has 40 years experience in the building trade and currently is a self employed builder. Would it be easy for him to pick up work there? I'm assuming that plenty of people need their houses maintaining/improved etc. Many thanks in advance for any specific advice you can give on this. Just to let you all know it's blowing a gale in Tayside (severe wind weather warning!) so those of you grumbling about it being winter there..............we have no sympathy!!!!

tsg, Maybe not what you want to hear, but 'as it is' GAU, not a bad school at all, only thing your daughter may struggle with a little is catching up on the Turkish, which is mandatory, one hour a day. ESK, probably a better school option. British Academy (ex Sunny Lane, soon to be Doga College), undergoing changes so who knows. Alsancak/Lapta/Karsiyaka/Karaglanoglu - probably the best areas all round, though I am sure a few 'cor blimey guvnors' from Chavtalkoy may suggest different. For your chap working, sorry, but little or no chance as to get a work permit an employer will have to prove no local equivalent labour, and I am afraid 'quality of work' is not a consideration. Bottom line is, you should only move here is you are self sufficient in terms of funds, with no need to work, other than that you will likely find it hard going. As I say, maybe not what you want to hear, but better to hear it now than later, and I am considering primarily your daughter, and not y

Well Tysidegirl all I can say is you will be a lot better off in many ways being over here. As for your boyfriend if he is a good British builder I am sure he will get plenty of work offers from the many Brits here. I for one would welcome a good quality British builder `friend' as i have plenty of need for good workmanship. People will always mention the negatives wherever they are but there is a lot to be said for the sun on your back and a simpler un hurried lifestyle.

I think you need to move over with enough income to cover your living expenses. Then any earnings will be a bonus which will enable you to have a higher standard of living. There is a lot of work available with exterior painting, most of the properties here are rendered and painted and need re-doing around every 3-5 years with touch ups inbetween.

Thanks onehand, it's nice to hear something positive for a change. I wonder why so many people stay living over there with some of the comments i've been given on my 2 posts. I quite agree that sunshine and a pared-down lifestyle is a positive thing. The point is nowhere is perfect but when the sun is shining for a lot of the year, everything just seems better. (It would be good if more of the people on here remembered the positives!) Steps, fyi, I put this post up and no-one responded which was why I did another post, hence 2 in similar vein. The second was specifically regarding work for my boyfriend. I have enough info now anyway thanks everyone, particularly those that emailed me directly.

I guess it is the British way to whinge about everyone and everything. I love my Country but recognise the shortcomings. I keep open minded and have a fair opinion. A lot of people over here forget what it's like to open the curtains in the morning and watch the cold, wind and rain. They take their kids to school huddled up from the cold. Here you open the curtains to lovely sunshine and beautiful warmth which starts your day off well. It is not perfect by any means but there again nowhere else is. I would say get your cold bones over here, your fella will get work (I and others I know have a fair bit needs doing) your child will love it too. If you cannot afford caviar for your breakfast then just settle for toast. Live within your means and enjoy what you have.

Always work for builders here !!!! Best profession you could possibly have here. Especially in a year or 2 as another boom is imminent !!! It is the land prices you have to watch as they tell the real story. Land I purchased 3 years ago has trebled in price. I would definably give N C a go if I was in your shoes

Good news - Cyprusman3! After a week of listening to negativity from people it's really great to hear some positive news from people. My thoughts re. good builders is that even in difficult times a good builder should always be able to pick up some work, but it was much disputed on this forum by people, so thank you. My other half is delighted! It's cold, damp and grey in Scotland today.

No, you are wrong message 25 and the wife is defo right lol I have a very positive feeling about North Cyprus and so does Bulut construction from Turkey as they just bought out all of Ozyalcin construction's unfinished projects !!! They paid 7.5m sterling for the site between Nicosia and Kyrenia. Must be something happening here don't you think?

I don't see the above as a positive move Cyprusman3. Yet another TC construction company has folded, leaving more empty rotting shells all over the island and needing to be "saved" by a Turkish Company. Has this action also left lots of buyers in the lurch, having paid for property they will not own? Or will Bulat honour Ozyalcin's existing contracts? Are there buyers of Ozyalcin that have lost out due to this take over?

I apologise in advance for being thankful for the investment of a Turkish company and anyone that may have lost out in the process, however, having done limited research over the past couple of weeks and some 2 years ago, when I previously looked at NC, it does seem that anyone buying new builds/off plan etc. in this extremely fraught market, hasn't done their research properly and left themselves over-exposed. It has to be said if the company has folded the buyers will have lost out whether it's been bought out or not. Is it better to leave a derelict shell or another company to take over the build and finish? So Cyprusman, thanks again for the info. It's good news as far as we are concerned. If major companies are investing that's an excellent sign.

Taysidegirl - are you genuine - or stupid !! No offence but even if you do buy and get all the necessary "documentation" who knows what will become of TRNC in the future - and I am talking as one who cannot stay away from the place - as a holiday visitor. And anyway why does TRNC need even more master builders or whatever?!

message 29 Your reply shows that you know little about the political situation in North Cyprus and the existing problems within the construction industry. Doing a bit more research will give you a greater understanding of the current situation but it may well burst the bubble that you appear to be forming. Knowing what is reality and what is fantasy will help you in your decision, whatever it might be.Please try to keep a balanced view otherwise you will become a sitting duck. People by the way, are not caught out because they have not done their homework, but because the conveyancing laws within the TRNC are full of loop-holes that allow fraud and corruption to flourish within a legal framework. Where else in the world could you pay in full for a property that the seller has no legal obligation to hand over deeds or if he runs into debt you become responsible for paying his debt or risk your home?

In the longer run, and I am talking potentially only a couple of years, I am with C3 on this, and an very much contrary to Bertie Look at the millions invested in large scale hotel projects (the Merit will more than double in size, plus marina, plus golf course etc), these companies are connected at the very top, and wouldn’t invest unless their money was safe, and there was a reason, and they already knew the outcome of what appears on the face of it to be an uncertain future. Now look at the imminent permanent division of the island, thus securing all north lands, made more credible by the suggestion of a new name for the north. Msny TC’s and MlT’s own large tourist businesses in the Karpaz, will they be sold out, I doubt it. There will be another boom here in the not too distant future, as compared to the rest of Mediterranean Europe, it’s cheap, and away from the Euro. Just a case of when. 2-3 years I would guess. However TSG, you still need a work permit for hubby.

Hhhhhmmmmmmmmm, Bertieboss/Bradus, I am well aware of enough that is going on in terms of builders (and others!) securing mortgages against deeds on properties people have bought. I would say, that is what I mean in people not doing there homework. If they haven't researched what MAY happen in terms of the system being so corrupt, I would class that not doing their homework properly. I have no intention of buying at the moment, I am happy to keep my investments elsewhere thank you. And no, I'm not stupid, but thank you for asking. My point is if a Turkish company is prepared to invest 7.5 million in NC it is all for the good.

Unfortunately most of these medium sized companies are not 100% safe !! we all know it they can fold any time so its up to the purchaser to find more reliable methods for buying property ie re sale or use builders which supply guarantees !! I am myself starting a building company up and will guarantee all works and also back it up with assets and a show project consisting of 24 apartments in Zeytinlik which will be completed within 2 months. and fully paid for by myself.

As an aside, as I read these (some of the previous remarks made by peoples' stupid assumptions) out to my boyfriend, he is in stitches with laughter. If I hadn't had personal emails from people, and enlightened input from people such as cyprusman, we would have been put off from moving to NC by a small minority of people on this forum who have obviously nothing better to do than infect other people with their negtivity of everything. How bad is it all really? My bills for last year gas & electric only were approx £900, the estimated for this year is £1800 (based on my last 3 years useage). That's not to mention the cost of everything, council tax, food, petrol etc. increasing all the time. The cost of living here is astronomical now, and fortunately for me I don't have a mortgage to pay. Yes, there are problems everywhere but look on the bright side, at least you have sunshine!

I'm not sure that the article has translated well. Straightforward question: Why is the island full of empty unsold buildings and under occupied hotels? Given that the market is stagnant why build more, especially in the Karpas! The problem in the TRNC is that there is a massive level of oversupply and properties for sale which are often overpriced and suffering from falling values. The extremely negative LONG TERM press coverage, widespread government corruption on every level and rock-bottom transactions warrants that they address these issues rather than add to them, if the market is to improve. Why are alarm bells ringing with the news of Israel investing? Oh I know the last time they invested buyers were left with a 2 million mortgage on their properties. Good investment.........................but for who?

Taysidegirl Re msg 39 My electricity bills here in the TRNC average almost £100 per month. I top up my gas tank 3 times a year at a cost of approx £800. My water bills average around £20 per month. Utilities here are very expensive and electric is due to go up 35%, yes 35% this year !! We travel back to the UK on a regular basis and always think how cheap the food is when walking around the shops. OK we don't pay council tax, but then again, apart from having our bins emptied, we get very little from the Belediyesi. Street lighting is poor and the state of the roads/streets is very bad in places. But the sun shines so it is not all bad.
