it is most probably compressed as a .rar or .zip file so it must first be decompressed before you can play it with a media player.. Winrar is the best software to unzip compressed files..

Daisy, does the file name have an extension? Three characters after a dot? If so, which three characters?

DD What you download using a torrent is not a torrent but file of one of a variety of other types.. be it ,mp4 .mp3 .avi .mkv .epub .mobi etc. etc. So what is the full filename of file you have downloaded using a torrent? It may be that you simply need a codec (coder - decoder) installed to enable your media player to play the format... usually but not always K-Lite Codec Pack (which is available free) will solve the problems of file type not playing due to unknown format.
