Although I am still in NZ, I have been following the sad and horrific stories of the continuing incidents of poisoning of pets, we are so saddened by this. It makes me even more determined to try and get our Petition to actually persuade the Government to do something positive in stopping this barbaric practice. The total now stands at 2165 but more signatures are always welcome. Please go to http://www.docmartintrnc.net/petition to add your signature in an effort to stop this cruelty and keep the pressure on the Government to take action. Thank you and our sympathies to those who have recently lost their beloved pets.

i sometimes think that the petition that we REALLY want is for education on animal rights and human behavioufr towards the other creatures that make up our planet. Maybe the main nasty is not so much the availability of poison, but the poison hearts of those who use it.

Marion. Education on animal rights, have you seen the wild fox in a pen in the park near the market, it paces up and down so frustrated. I don't live there but was upset when I saw it there a few weeks ago.

I have signed, but in sympathy with the shepherds and those who's livelyhood depends on sheep/goats,they have been here for years. This is their way of life.I am sure the shepherds do not mean to harm the expat's pets. They are after the wild, unowned dogs that roam the area, which will attack and eat the herd.

Perhaps we should demand a "free from poison"areas in our villages, where are dogs can run off leash.

Thank you Mike, This is a good suggestion and something I shall consider suggesting when I take the Petition to the Government.

to Woodspeckie - no I haven't seen it. Is that the area designated as the children's zoo?I will take a look and take some photos. If this is the area you mean, I don't go in there normally as it is a 'No Dogs' area!" There seem to be few public places where one may take a dog, even a well educated one on a lead. something I fine amusing here, but one has to stick to the rules.

to Mike of Lapta, I agree entirely and as I always say, no two countries develop at the same rate. I remember when I was a kid that kittens and puppies were drowned in buckets! (in London) - giving my age away here a bit! But the problem here is that so often there are no animals around, it is not an agricultural area, and one cannoty but wonder why poison is put down. In Malatya there is no agriculture left! No v ineyards, no oli vbe groves, no orchards and no flocks. And this is the second time in a few years. I DO sympathise with shepherd,s but surely the council can provide a humane way of killing -

By the way when I liv ed in the south, some 20 years ago, there was a zoo in limassol with asn ancient elephant who spent all his time 'moaning'; because he had no space whatsoever. Dreadful shame, but it was solely lack of education as to what elephants need.

It probably is very distressed. i would not like to be confined in a small area. It is like being punished for existing. I will go take a look and take some pics. Mind you, I think if people are concerned they must express their feelings to the Mayor of Girne as the park is the responsibility of the municipality. I don't suppose he realises.

This country treats animals appallingly, they are not idiots how would they like to be holed up in a 4ft x 4ft home 24/7, anyone with an ounce of sense knows this is wrong, they just do not like dogs fullstop.

Of course cruelty to animals is not to be tollearated.

There is without doubt a serious dog problem in the TRNC. Too many strays, deserted and neglected animals that become distressed, aggressive and generally a problem to many TRNC inhabitants.

Whilst this problem escalates the undergoround apparent solution to the problem is also apparent.

The government should possibly also be petitioned to introduce dog controls and ownership legislation that makes owners take responsiblity for their animals.

With legislative remedy to the underlying issue perhaps the "underground" solution seekers will pack away their cruel chemicals of torture

I have taken on board everyone's comments. I think maybe some sort of warning that there is poison in an area might help. Anyway, I am making a note of all suggestions which I shall present alongside the Petition. Thanks to you that have signed over the past couple of days.
