Today's Kıbrıs is reporting that the employees of the Electricity board in TRNC have gone on strike as of 06.00 this morning. Apparently this is in response to the governments plans to privatise the electrity supply in TRNC.

Dickheads! They (Eroglu) should do what Reagan did with the ATCs in USA, sack them all on the spot, and re-hire them only if they agree to new terms and a no-strike agreement.

Why should these people be allowed to hold the TRNC to ransom?#

Our lefkosa office has been with generator power for the past 6 hours, we have 8 basestations all across Cyprus down due to extended power cuts and many more on batter power.

I am not sure if the power cuts are related to the strike but that wouldnt be so nice...

Was it about 1989 that the electricity in the Uk was denationalised? Prior to this I think we had similar experiences with strikes etc. I always think Cyprus is 20-30 years behind the UK.

Hate to jump to conclusions wıthout hard info but it ıs wıthın the realms of possibılıty that the Unions have effectively shut down the entire country and are now holding us all to ransom.

If tis ıs what has happened, how will the government respond ? Cave into thier demands ? Send in the army to take control of the power generating and distrıbution sites?

Anyway just in case I went to the shop and stocked up on gas bottles, matches and candles. Lıke the UK ın the late 70,s Our very own wınter of dıscontent perhaps ?

Flash News: The board of ministers just announced that they have used their law given power and stopped the strike, further strikes by the union after this point would be unlawful.

However, the had of the electricity board's union had previously stated that they would continue the strike even if this happens.

No response from the union side yet, we will have to wait and see.

We had to go to Lemar to do my internet (dongle) access for another month. The power went off whilst I was there and was off right down west as far as Simena Hotel in Karsiyaka. We are so lucky, the power is on down here.

Perhaps we will be next.

Just topped up the generator in Alsancak, as the power is still off.

I notice we haven't had one comment mentioning the Blitz.

Great time to use the telescope, apart from the vibrating generator!

When the power is back on, we may get posters asking for a reliable generator servicer. Well Ilker Kral is the best. 0533 875 7575, or 0542 858 4631. He looks frightening, but speaks good English.

East of Bogaz, off at 1400hrs and back on at 1930hrs.

Fantastic black sky, took to opportunity to get the telescope out and follow the "Stargazing programme".

Been here long enough to be well organised with emergency lighting, heating and cooking.

I just heard on BRT that the government in an emergency meeting has declared this afternoon that they have forbidden any strikes by the electrical workers union. Both sides seem to have a point but where does that leave us?

Privatisation may well be a good thing to get all government offices and hotels pay their electric bills. But that could also mean cut down on labour force, who at the moment are overstaffed just like in "Belediye" or any other government establishment. Some may well feel the need to strike to save their jobs.

That's probably because the telephone engineers union had also decided to act with the electricity ones - I did read that Tel-Sen was the other union who joined in (I believe short for Telephone Union in Turkish).

Workers Union has just announced that they will follow the no-strike rule that the government announced, but the employees will not be working tomorrow.

Trust me, it sounds as confusing in Turkish as it is in English

Strike today, no work tomorrow + the weekend = another 4 day holiday for the workers. Any excuse to have holidays and not do any work has become chronic in this country! I think around 2 months+ holidays a year is not very satisfying for our "hard working"(?), coffee drinking, newspaper reading layabouts of public employees in TRNC!

Off in Ozankoy all morning, one again at 1, off 5ish , came back half an hour ago, has now gone again.

Ive got battery back up for lights, but have moved bed into lounge in front of fire!

If you have elderly or otherwise vulnerable friends and neighbours please check they are able to change gas cylinders on fires and cookers and have a safe form of lighting.

If you dont have back up, dont forget to charge up mobile phones etc. when the electricity is on!

Almond -

Its not a film was me at my front door with a candle looking for unsuspecting victims to contribute a bit of body heat. No takers so went out for a meal.

Just wondering how many bodies it would take to raise the temperature in my apartment by 1 o/c?

Bring in the army to man the esential service, then get it privatised and get us a supply at a reasonable rate.

With a price quoted as being 3 times the world average, with too many receiving free electricity, with the anomoly of a builders rate. Get it sorted.

How would you feel if your husband/wife/kids/significant other had the air con on full blast trying to heat the room, whilst they also had electric heaters on but the windows were open!

Well go and look in almost any Government/Civil Service office. In fact you don't even have to go in, just look from outside to see who is smoking by an open window.

The police were sent to Kibteck last night, that is why the power came back on, when the police left off went the power.

This morning they have sent in the Army, but it seems the workers have disabled the power station.

Got this report a few minutes ago from a TC neighbour.

Have had a report there is power in some parts of Girne with trafic lights working.

In Ozankoy - no electricity for at least 6 hours after yesterdays loss of electric for at least 7 hours and the day before which was about 4 hours. Get the army in to guard the installations/power stations, sack them all and give them a new contract the same as a private company would.

Holding the country to ransom I call it, pure communisum and more. Have they no sense, get in line with the world.

Just seen post 78. If they were on strike how did they get into the power stations to disbale them? Are they getting paid by KibTek to disable the power stations?

This all beggars believe.

Is anyone elses freezer defrosting, all my food starting to go soft.

My daughter of 5 has been ill and trying to keep her wrapped up with blankets, I feel so sorry for the older people, what the hell is happening, I cannot believe this has been allowed to happen in this day and age. Sack the lot of them, they do b...... all most of the time. With all the power cuts that used to happen out here 17 years ago it was never this bad.

I also feel sorry for all the businesses that are loosing money through this, as if it's not hard enough for them to make money here in the first place. The whole country is being held to ransom, I am totally disgusted and any sympathy for them I may have had has gone right out the window, they deserve to loose their jobs.

Back on here in Girne about 30 mins ago. Wonder how many appliances have been ruined by all this crap? Seems to me like they turn power on for long enough to have a meal themselves and then turn it off again. Bunch of lazy, selfish heartless commies who are deluding themselves if they expect any support or sympathy.

Have the government got the bottle to take on this union and break it, or will they just roll over as usual, it is a disgrace that they are allowed to strike in this way.

i really do think that poeple who insult the locals about there right to withdraw there labour

in there own country will just have to learn to keep ther mouths shut and opinions keep private

after all if you go to someone elses home you abide by there rules and do not critise your host

and know your place as a guest it is there business people came to live here worts and all,and just becauce

money is spent that is irrevelent they are the masters, no wonder brits are having problems there

with everything thing they will treat you us with comtempt and boot you all out be warned

yes grumble by all means but do not insult them and call them names it is there right and there

arguement with there government, and if you do like it vote with your feet and leave but shut up for

christ sake or they will punish us all, there is freedom when you are a guest even if you do pay

and most of us do only have a temp visa or temp residence,do not air your thoughts in public

jacko99 can those of us that are TRNC citizens air our thoughts in public ?

I am actualy a believer in the concept of non profit municipal and state run untilities, but such have to offer best value and best service for that concept to be valid and sadly I do not think this is the case in the TRNC.

I also believe that unions and the right to withdraw your labour are vital tools to mediate against the exploitation of 'labour' by 'capital'.

If the state run utilites were providing efficent services then they would have my wholehearted support even if that resulted in my own electiricty or telphone supply going down. I just do not beleive this is the case however. I believe that this is about protecting a cushy number for state employees in these utilites, who do not want to provide best service as a state run enterprise nor live with the realites of the market in a private one. Just my personal view.

jocko99, Good for you, now wait for all the "hate" mail to arrive mate. You have it dead to rights anyway, if you don't like it then leave is the way ahead. It is their country and we are just visitors anyway. For one, I am very happy to stay here warts and all, as that was how we knew it would be when we made up our minds to come and live out our lives here.

But it is ok to join the coffee shop mutter and take a poke at the Government there - that is the same all over the world so worry not about that. But if you do - be prepared to listen to why your own Government is no good as well, no prisoners in the coffee shops!!!

mess 92 yes if turkish or turkish cyp of course but i doubt they would call them names or insult

them or even agree with clarksons and his views about shooting public sector workers and and there familys

ref to prev reply they are more civilised that some of the shameful big mouth british bigots who now reside in trnc at the gift of some of the turkish cyps they slagg off, and yes you a prob right this is what happens

with nationased industrys like was in uk but has to be grin and beaedr until they sought it out between themselves there is no god given right to constant lecky even if you pay for it, being a privilage not a right

just becauce you have the money to pay for it, when inconvienced have to learn to adapt

Just for info the Cyprus Mail (south newspaper) has an article about the North's blackouts here

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/north-plunged-darkness-electricity-strike/20120120

At the end of the article they cite from the TC public's reaction as seen on TC newspapers websites, quoting and presumably translating one TC as follows

"One reader, Ali Karacan said, “Damn you electricity workers! If KIBTEK had been privatised years ago we wouldn’t have had to put up with this nonsense. It should be privatised now and all the striking workers sacked”"

yes granted tc can say what they like an are prob right but they do not insult or slag each other off or agree that they should be shot and there loved the ones who have the most right to moan on public forums no one else

guest shud keep gobs shut on public forums on this very divisive issue which cud be about to make or break

them and cause an awfull lot of trouble and it certanly will not help if some of the gobby brits stir things up

wud be best just to stay neutral is this is a really sticky wicket

something that may have been not as serious as this for decades

Anyone know if the North are still selling electric to the South? Just wondered if they were cut off as well? No ulterior motive here, just interested.

seems to me that either new workers are operating the power supply and trying to get to grips with it or else others are deliberately messing things up at every opportunity..............power on and off and on and off etc etc...........what a shambles............

............get the non-payers to cough up what they owe............why havent they been cut off until they do?............something smells very badly about KibTek.............why don't the decent workers spill the beans about what is really going on?............

MSG 85 i am absolutely gob smacked its no wonder this country is in the state its in if this is how things are done how i would love to work two days a week for a sum like that and still get free electric one of the most expensive amenities here. THE whole lot should get the sack as far as im concerned, its one thing to cut the power for a few hours but to carry on through the coldest part of the year and let all the elderly and young children suffer like this its disgraceful.

These are the facts as from last night - I am translating from the press conference on BRT TV held by the Prime Minister and the minister respomsible for energy:

As of 5.00 pm, 8 technicians from AKSA - the other half of KIBTEK already privately owned & not on strike - had been escorted to TEKNECİK powerplant by special police/military to take over the shift after the strikers were immobilised. They then turned on all generators one by one (which were off). The police had stayed there to prevent any interference from any strikers. By 7.30 pm the whole of TRNC was back to normal and should stay normal, except for a small part in Karpaz, and a small part of Lefkoşa.

The lines to Geçitkale and Yeni Boğaz were apparently sabotaged and they were working to fix them all night. This part was supplied by AKSA who produces 110 MW of the electricity. Because of the sabotage they were also down to 50 MW and could not supplement the cuts by KIBTEK when they went on strike.

The government also declared that what was done by the workers was illegal and all those responsible will be punished according to the rules and laws.

They also gave details about the financial situation of KIBTEK (dire!) and stated they are only intending to privatise the "billing and collection" part of the electricity board. Apparently there is a lot of wastage and pirate use of electricity which the current service cannot cope with. Apparently current debts by KIBTEK run up to 250 million! If not sorted, KIBTEK would go bankrupt by June...

Anyway everything is back to normal and hopefully will stay that way.

Internet up, great, that must mean that Telecoms have agreed not to strike for 60 days.

No electric yesterday from 6.00pm until 12.15am this morning. Then at 12.15am there was a double barrelled gun went off somewhere on the east side of Girne and ALL the electricity supply from Girne, Karakum, Dogankoy, Ozankoy and probably more other areas came on, just like that. Were there workmen awaiting the call (shotgun) to turn everyone back on again???????

I heard from one of Kibtek's subcontractors that two diesel generators at one of their power stations "exploded" yesterday and it will take at least ten days to repair them.

The guy said that there are also problems with the steam generators and that we can expect major disruption to power supplies for the next three weeks.

I am not sure if this information is 100% accurate but I know the guy and have no reason to disbelieve him.

Has anyone from the Government made a statement yet about what is happening, I think they ought to and let people know what to expect. Surely the Country will be in a state of emergency if power is off for possibly another 2 weeks.
