I all, I posted some time ago about the possibility of opening a fresh fish shop when my family and I move back to North Cyprus in June. I had both positive and negative feedback from the previous post but have done a lot of research and have my sister-in-law out there currently who assures me that there would be a market for such a service. I have had offers of supplies in the area and have many many contacts here in Cornwall who can ship fish to me, what I'm getting at is, would you like to see more variety and indeed welcome an experienced, friendly fishmonger to supply such delicious food? I am also toying with the idea of running a refrigerated home delivery van. many thanks and I'm looking for positives rather than negatives. enjoy your day everybody

Devonboy, a proper fresh and full range of shell fish and fresh fish would be a boon to residents and visitors. If you can get a regular supply of top quality langoustines , crabs, prawns, lobster, mussels, squid, octopus and a good selection of Mediterranean fish plus trout. We have one store current west side and whilst quite good "fresh" shell fish is a rarity. Have you decided on a location? I am sure that there may be a few negative posts, but these will be mostly from those who eat their fish in batter out of newspaper!

cheers tonyf, ill be living in Catalkoy, so if I decide to buy a van I'll travel all over, if a shop is my way to go then options are along the Girne to Catalkoy road or possibly in town centre itself, still to decide. I have 2 or 3 companies who can provide me with all things you mentioned and more, I have also had responses from a couple people on here who catch bits themselves so would always have plenty to offer. glad to know its something you would like to see, lets hope there is mre of the same.

just to say that I would provide a home delivery service if I do open the shop as opposed to the mobile monger van.

Jerseybean = I make moule mariniere, both the traditional without cream and the more luxurious with cream, my family and guests love it. Once again the mussels have to be fresh fresh fresh. So devonboy go for it.

Again thanks for positives. All looking good. Now to decide whether mobile service or shop is best.

You need to check with the authorities what you can import. Also if you are importing langoustines, which attract a premium in the UK, put on the cost of transport and spoilage to be honest I do not think you will be able to sell them.

Thanks islandgirl, have taken into account but like u say will need to find out what I can import, as I've been told most popular fish should be fine. Have limited info being a Sunday but will be back on it tomorrow.

Here's wishing you the best of luck with your business. I eat mostly fish, except when in N Cyprus. As you know good fish is hard to find and no shellfish.

I'd really welcome the availability of fresh fish. Cost and freshness would be the issue for me and where I could buy it. With the high temperatures in Cyprus I believe you will have to have a refrigerated van. Good luck.

Thanks guys, looking into prices etc for vans. hoping that with the positive talks I've had already then I should be able to provide a reasonably price source of fresh fish.

Devonboy, when I stayed in Paphos ,a shop opened up called (I think) Billingsgate selling fresh and frozen UK products including dressed crab and shell food. I kid you not they used to sell out all the time ,not only was it ex-pats using it the local resturants as well.So if it is anything similar there it should be a great choice. Btw it was not that cheap, but the things like cockles etc were like treats for people so they did not mind paying , I loved their smoked mackeral ,choice of dyed or not .

It is so refreshing to see positive answers and comments to a post on C44. I think you have it devonboy shellfish and good fresh fish at reasonable prices would do well. As you can see the current suppliers are fairly crap, and most of the restauraunts serve what they can get. As previous posters have suggested expats, visitors and local restauraunts would welcome your services. Local delivery would be great, but as suggested the heat in summer and difficult access to some properties might cause you a few problems. Best of luck.

I have to agree Tonyf, very good to see so many positives. Im looking into shop prices and will use the van for home deliveries i think, you're quite right in what you say about access to certain places. Jon many thanks for your post, is good to know and hopefully will take off just as well.
