A team of 130 technicians and engineers arrived from Turkey (Aksa) on a private flight yesterday. 12 would work at Teknecik and the rest on transmission lines.

Teknecik began producing 100 MVA (almost full capacity of diesel engines there) today. They are not touching the two 60 MVA steam turbine generators as I explained before on C44.

Unions have been dead against privatisation and they always asked for autonomy. They went on strike when a general bill on privatisation went to parliament. The government claimed that it was a general bill and not connected directly with Kib-tek.

Today the government and unions met and hammered out a "face saver". Then the Council of Ministers met and took a decision and immediately got it published in the official gazette. According to that decision, Kib-tek will be reorganised in financial and management matters and then be made autonomous. The unions consulted their members and decided to lift the strike as from tomorrow morning. ctd.

Many institutions in TRNC like many government banks (koop, Vakiflar etc.), the old Cyprus Turkish Airways, Eastern Mediterranean University, Lefka European University are all autonomous but the goverment always has its fingers in all of them. As a result business as usual: more employment before the elelctions of relatives and friends close to the ruling party etc.

I think this is the end of the big strikes and the closure of an era, similar to the seventees in UK with the good old lady in charge. I expect the Kib-tek management will make sure that they have staff at critical positions loyal to them and I expect lots of staff changing places, and the union will not be able to do anything about it.

Once the bill on privatisation is passed by parliament I expect Kib-tek to be the first to be privatised together with the telecom. We will see.

Thank you for the info and insight Ismet. Are you saying this is the bed=ginning of the end of over staffed inefficiency? I really do hope so.

Just an update on a new development. Advocate Akan Kursat of Talat Kursat Law Office has filed a court case against the union for damages. In my view he has a very good case against the union. Once the government "postponed" the strike for 60 days, the union acted illegally by continuing the strike. Hence they should be liable for the effects of their illegal actions. Well, many more people may do the same. The time limitation on civil wrongs is five years. They may wait for the outcome of this case and then take action but will they have the funds to pay any? I doubt it. So at the end it can be a hollow victory but it sounds good anyway.
