Of course, but I guess he has found how costly setting up a business is. Elsewhere one might go for the cheaper optionof self-employment but here that is not an option.

Woodspeckie.................Last year work permits were not being issued anymore for foreigners and this may still be in place. However, before this came into force, yes, a foreigner could set up a business and get a work permit.

The previous post I put in November a user gave me the name of an accountant. Is there a quick way to find the post without trawling through all the messages?

Make yourself known to as many Cypriots as possible, one may get you a permit. The costs to an expat here to run a business are prohibitive.

You are allowed to set yourself up in business here as a limited company. You don't necessarily need to have a Turkish Cypriot partner but that depends on the type of business you will be running. Your accountant will be able to advise you on that. Either way you must have 1 director and 1 company secretary at the very least. Each will need a work permit. Once the business permit has been obtained you will then be able to apply for your work permit (as a business owner - your permit will be around 4 times higher than it would have been if you had been an employee!). Good luck!

cyp1966. As Pippie has pointed out you will have to open your own company, doing so you will get a business permit in your passport as will your company secretary, once you have this you do not need a work permit as this is it. I have had a company here for quite a long time all thought it is now no longer trading. To set your own company up in the TRNC is very expensive first there is a very large bond you must deposit in to a bank, this you will be able to retrieve after a set period, but you will have to deposit a set amount into the company account which you are not allowed to touch, this is a secondary bond to cover any taxes that are not paid. My accountant is Fevzi Adanar tel number 00 533 8683077 he live and the office is in upper Girne. Just mention Mel has given you this number. Hope this is of some help. Mel

does the size of the business you are trying to set up depend on the bond you have to bank

Gates....it was good to see someone "spell it out" as to what we Legally employed/employees have to pay out. I am sure when we give quotes for work, people think we are plucking the figures out of the air!! May I point out to those reading, that the monthly figures in Gates's reply have to be paid even when there is a "slack " period in employment-no concessions/reductions.It is normal for us to work a 14hour day in the summer just to be in hand for the winter months. It is gruelling in the heat but has to be done. As I said to Billywizz a few days ago......to work without a permit can be deportation if caught by the authorities.....not a good option if working for pocket money.
