I have two Tilly lamps and would like to know where I can purchase, Paraffin ( Fuel for the lamps) and Metholated Spirits ? ( Plus the adapter which goes onto the upright dispenser holding the mantle) which heats the silk mantle enabling the mantle to ignite and give light and heat. (The adapter clips onto the upright and holds fabric which has absorbed the metholated spirits and when ignited produces intense heat to allow the silk mantle to ignite and produce light . I would also like to know where I can purchase the silk mantles?

Thank you for your assistance.

Gerry,

Paraffin you can buy at any garage. Meths from most Yapi or Supermarkets. The adapter - never seen any out here at all but you can try a ball of cotton wool placed under the new mantle (not touching of course) and soak that in meths, used to work for me! New mantles for genuine Tilly lamps are like chickens teeth but I have four - Part Number 164X - brand new spares and one new one out of its packet, if you need them they are yours. You can buy similar here but they tend to be smaller.

Have no Tilly lamp left to play with now so you are welcome to them. Mmmmm, pies cooked in foil on the top of the lamp while you wait for that first bite on the first day of the opening season - memory's!!!!!

Saw thw title and thought you must be thirsty ha!

Seriosly though, this took me back to when I used to go fishing as a youngster, on the end of a cold damp pier late at night, with just a tilly lamp to keep me warm and provide light.

Unfortunately I wouldn't let my kids go to the same places today.

I have found "Paraffin"at the garage across the road from my house, I have tried many "Yapi Markets but have had no success so far for the Methylated spirits. I will keep trying. ( Maybe a chemist shop ?)

waddo. I thank you for your kind offer for the mantles. Can we arrange to meet someplace so that I can collect them from you. ? Trying to ignite the lamps without meths is very difficult ( But not impossible) and whilst in the forces I used to be able to light them with little problem ! Either I've changed or the paraffin has changed !!!! LOL

You could have a go with SAF Alkol which is ethanol which is what most of meths is except they add methanol to make it less palatable. would it harm to try?

Gerry,

The SAF Alkol is meths by another name (plus a little additive) and works fine. I am out at Catalkoy but can meet you anywhere tomorrow - nothing to do then anyway. Let me know where and I will take a trip out the "Other Side" for a change. Drop me an email in case the power goes down and at least I will get it on my phone!
