I believe you only need a licence if you are using things other than a fishing tackle. I did ask a friend (who works for the municipality) last summer who gave a definite "no" as an answer.

Class it the same as using a mobile phone when driving or having a chain saw without a license - you get caught, you get fined! When it came out it was only required if you were not a Turkish Cypriot and the reason was to stop all the Greek Cypriots from coming across the border to fish for free!! Maybe it was true, maybe not, maybe it has changed now, maybe not. If you try to find out the real truth you will never go fishing anyway as you won't have any time left to fish in. I just gave up fishing till it sorts itself out again - well that's what I tell everyone anyway!!!!!!

Not moaning about the Government because it is just about the same for some things in the UK - it is just the way it is, so either buy a license or don't, its your wallet in the end. The only anomalies in the whole system is that, some of the time, the fine is less than the cost of being legal - funny that.

The Med is currently the most overfished sea in the world, maybe a 12 month ban on all fishing will help stocks to recover!!!

Last year the scientists said that bluefin tuna were finished as a species if fishing for them in the Med didn't stop for at least 5 years (it is the major of only 2 breeding grounds). At the resulting international conference Japan (who else) and their cronies, some of whom don't even have a coastline, managed enough votes to veto the proposal.

4 years ago there was a huge storm and 27 Japanese trawlers were counted sheltering near the Karpaz - and that was before they polluted half their own seas with the recent nuclear accident. They use mainly drift nets which kill so many other species indiscriminately (including dolphin) - the Med is doomed for fishing.

Mess 11, we also saw the trawlers (hiding) near the Karpaz. The locals told us that they were waiting for the official start to begin catching the tuna which goes east to spawn and then returns westwards. I felt sick when we counted all those large boats. They must have cleaned up the Med between them.

On another note, my husband once observed a man who had been speargun hunting squid or whatever, being charged by the police because it was not the hunting season! Everyone was agog at this because no one could have dreamed that there was a 'season' on squid. Unbelievable!
