I am using Turkcell 3G Mobile Modem. Location - Alsancak by the Camelot beach turn off. For general internet, Emails, fine. But we also use it a lot for Skype, sometimes Skype is so bad that we just give up until it gets better. It wasn't until I ran a few speed tests that I found out why.

Run 1 202, 190, 101, 166, 94 Kbs Average 151 Kbs

Run 2 205, 258, 491, 432, 457 Bbs Average 366 Kbs (1 Minute after Run 1)

The speeds are so variable that taking 1 in isolation is meaningless - at least 5 have to be averaged, and if you are looking for improvement changes by moving the location of the modem then you need about 20 readings at each location interleaved over time. (Fit an extension lead to it - but I think you can't go over 3 metres without problems occurring)

I tried various orientations of the Modem - upside down, on its side, north, south, east and west - this didn't make any detectable difference, but moving it about 4 feet in one direction did give a 40% improvement, so now w

so now when using Skype the modem will be tied to the curtains! We are on the ground floor, so I'll have to give it a go up on the roof as well.

All these figures are completely meaningless unless you state clearly what type of connection you have - e.g. dial-up, ADSL, wireless, 3G, satellite etc. - and what package you are actually paying for - 256, 512, 1M, 2M etc - so that we can compare like with like.

its faster in UK becausethe site is located in UK, thats why the time is quicker.(I think)

from the US it is normal it would take a few seconds longer for the ping..

Milliseconds perhaps - It would only take seconds if the server was on the Moon!

Turbo

The 7816 I guess is the info dump that is used by this particular site to tests speeds. I am not a computery person but that is what I get and no doubt everyone else will get the same but the rate at which the info is recieved is the connection speed........I think.

I was recently asked this question.

I am a day trader in the UK and shall be shortly moving to NC to live, could you please advise me as to the fastest and most reliable internet service in NC.As I trade the US markets latency is vital. What kind of latency should I expect?

Well you can see the latency in the ping results above. My main concern if the internet is vital to you making or losing money, would be having a reliable connection in the TRNC. If I were you I would spend the extra money and have a business package put in and have 3G as a standby. But like others will tell you on here, reliablity is the main thing. Also, if the link goes down between TRNC and Turkey, you will be totally stuffed. This is not the country to be sat at a desk relying on split second timing over the internet.

Hope this all helps. Just my personal advice but sure someone will either agree or disagree.

Divide the info dump rate eg: 7816 by the time eg: 1.886 = 4.144 Meg.

Hilltop. Msg 43.

If you are paying for a 512/128 connection you must have some fancy software to speed it up to the thick end of 2.5Meg.

Is the software you use downloadable? (good word that) and is it possible for you to enlighten us as to what it is called?

Cheers

I used the speedtest.net app for

3g 'limitless'

whilst testing against Andys results with

Firefox

This is after having installed the systemlogix software that Andy kindly gave out, although I have had error messages which I have not dealt with yet, so no idea if its working to optimise my connection or not!

Seem to be getting a regular 1709kbps download and around 335 kpbs upload - have no idea whether thats particularly very good, but doesn't feel slow.

Hot Hornet

Blimey, the speed you are getting on 3g ompared to me. Can I sit in your lounge and use the internet?

I do find that the results on Speedtest.net are far different from the ZdNet site. Now this will be down to network/server congestion. We are probably all causing the ZdNet server to grind to a halt as we are all testing on it. But basically, if we all find an ISP that out does the others, if we all switched to using them, they would slow down and the others would then do better!!
