The video tape shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somalian pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker. The European Union navy that patrols these waters would not interfere because they feared there could be casualties. So the Russian Navy Commandos freed their compatriots and the tanker … and then moved the pirates back to their own pirate ship, the Russians searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives … and found plenty! Then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates hand-cuffed to it [no need for] any court proceedings, lawyers, etc. They used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries where the captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with pirates.

http://gcaptain.com/attention-pirates-dont-f/?27840 Essentially the Russian Navy boarded a pirate ship and freed some Russian seafarers who had just been captured by pirates. Then the Russians handcuffed all the pirates to the pirate ship, and blew it up. ***UPDATE*** According to a Telegraph News Report from 2009, the pirates in this video were not, in fact, set on fire and blown up in cold blood by the Russians, but were taken in custody on board the destroyer Admiral Panteleev.

Phil - (Msg 14) where did the land stealing comment come from?!! You fell into the trap of believing a false claim about the Russian Navy (not your fault) and then perpetuated it . Your UK armchair comments about the military in general (including slating our own brave serviceman) have not been your greatest success (perhaps leave it to those who've served or those who take the time to think things through) and I always think a bit of investigation first is always a good thing... but in the words of Harry Enfield "Calm down...calm down". Now back to the thread... what was it again?

Now THAT is what I call a solution! Pity our namby-pamby western governments do not adopt the same principles. Go Russian Navy-go!

Matula - unfortunately the Russian Navy did not 'go navy go' - the report of them tying up pirates and blowing them up (and recording it) is a spoof... much as some people wish it was true it wasn't.

message 14: it is true the russians don't stand on ceremony when their staff are kidnapped, as in lebanon, neither do they roll over when seafarers are put in peril your problem, real or affected about land without deeds risky or stolen land etc., is I'm sure you would agree a direct result of the 1974 turkish landings in cyprus ...and turkey does not pussyfoot either, when the lives of its people are at stake

Re: Msg24, (Off-topic) I wonder if you've been watching BBC2's "Putin,Russia & the West" on Thursdays. Quite something. Unfortunately I missed the first part, saw some of the second part about Putin fixing the results of the 2004 elections in Ukraine. The next one is about conflict in Georgia.

yes indeed c2, it is a cracking series so far when I was in st petersburg over the recent holiday I got the impression that thinking russians at least are well aware of the whole setup but was not convinced that many of them see any viable alternative another thing and though I am trying to avoid a "1984" style cliche, strength is a sort of weakness: putin's objectives at least the stated ones are modest: lukewarm on privitization which means continued governmental control, a strong russia etc etc and he tried, unsuccessfully, to get britain to agree to scrap visas...and otherwise a conservative foreign policy: they "lost" libya and iraq, and the west should butt out so they can hang on to syria the liberals have a poor track record from when they were associated with the yeltsin regime, and very divided but there are sinister forces on the march ie the ultranationalists and communists, who have a much clearer idea of what they want

Having once been invited onto a RN ship for Mess drinks and party games I think the most likely was that the pirates were placed into barrels (with the bungs removed) for the recreational activity of the crew then made to walk the plank when Shark infested waters were certain.

Clarissa2. In other posts you label members inane. I was taught to swear by a Padre but he had the manners not to make untruthful comments based on prejudice not fact. How beautiful is that ?

Clarissa 2. Your comment is an affront to those who enjoy this man's friendship. I can assure you that DeputyDawg was a Captain (and was decorated) in the service of Her Majesty's Army. Whilst he may have a bit of fun on here I can also assure you that he is a perfect gentleman and your comments are unworthy as you do not even know the man.

Re: Msg26, anre514, I watched yesterday the programme from the beginning to the end. Top class! BBC at its best! The most enjoyable was to listen to all the interviews of the world leaders and politicians in their own languages, so much more was said than in the subtitles! Who needs thrillers when you can have programmes like that. Well done BBC! Looking forward to the next Thursday.

Re: Msg 30, deputydawg, FYI, I didn't call the person inane, but her post, which was just stating the obvious. I don't use crude or vulgar vocabulary, unlike others. Re: Msg31, suehowlittle, I've never said I know him personally, I only commented on his posts. A captain? So what? I was a captain when I was in my 20ies. A very strange way to express himself, and far from gentlemanly. More's the pity for the captain.
